“Nodal debe tener mucha paz.

  • A tighter group: Donovan Mitchell and James Harden lean into rare offseason bonding to build Cavaliers’ chemistry

A tighter group: Donovan Mitchell and James Harden lean into rare offseason bonding to build Cavaliers’ chemistry

Donovan Mitchell and James Harden lead offseason bonding efforts to build Cavaliers’ chemistry.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Donovan Mitchell and his Cleveland Cavaliers teammates didn’t go their separate ways for four months before reassembling a couple of weeks ago for the start of offseason workouts.

Instead, from the time the Cavaliers were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals by the New York Knicks until Monday’s media day, which marked the unofficial start of training camp, the group has spent a lot of time around each other.

“I think this is probably the most time I’ve spent with my teammates outside of the actual season in my career,” Mitchell said. “From being in New York at the (US) Open and working out there and then going to James’ (Harden’s) birthday and working out there. And the crazy part is none of us went to Summer League (in Las Vegas).”

James Harden was at the forefront of building the team bonding during the offseason. Harden was a midseason acquisition last year, but really didn’t get to know his teammates off the court until the summer.

“We really didn’t have an opportunity to have that team bond, games in the regular season. And then you’re preparing for the postseason everything is intensified. So this summer was a really good opportunity for us to learn each other,” he said. “Understanding somebody that’s like any job in the world. Now it’s giving them comfortability to come talk to me or me talk to them in ways that we never really had before. I think we’ve built some really good stuff over these last few months.”

Besides the time spent around teammates, both showed their commitment by signing new contracts during the offseason.

Mitchell inked a four-year, $273-million contract extension on the first day of the offseason signing period. The seven-time All-Star had two seasons remaining on his contract and could have waited to re-sign until next summer, when he would be eligible for a five-year supermax deal worth $350 million.

“I could have waited and made it about myself and whatnot, but for me, how can we as a team go out there and find a way to make moves? I’ve said to him (vice president of basketball operations Koby Altman) I want to be here. I’ve said it publicly and I love being here. And I think for me, now it’s about delivering and everything else that comes with it,” Mitchell said.

Harden signed a three-year, $97 million contract last month after declining his player option. He also helped recruit acquiring Peyton Watson in a five-team trade.

“I think it was a no-brainer. He’s young, he’s athletic, he’s gotten a lot better and it just fits what we’re trying to do. He’s been in postseason runs with Denver, so he knows what that looks like,” Harden said of Watson.

Center Thomas Bryant, who also re-signed with the Cavaliers during the offseason, said the biggest group during the offseason is that everyone is speaking the same language when it comes to running plays. That’s something that didn’t happen last season with the midseason trades and also the Cavaliers having 41 different starting lineups during the regular season due to injuries.

“We’re having these now before we even started the new year with the team. I think that’s a great step of growth going forward,” he said.

Mitchell and Harden will need to put together big seasons again if the Cavaliers are going to contend in the Eastern Conference. The 29-year old Mitchell averaged 27.9 points, 5.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds during the regular season, along with 26 points in the playoffs.

The 36-year-old Harden is going into his 18th NBA season. He averaged 10.7 points for the Cavaliers in the regular season, and 19.7 points in the postseason.

The team bonding will continue over the next week as the Cavaliers hold training camp in Spain. They open the regular season on October 22 at Philadelphia against LeBron James and the 76ers.

“More time together equals more success, in my mind. Number one, it’s just a good group of guys we’ve got here. If you’re willing to sacrifice for each other, that goes such a long way that nothing can make up for,” center Jarrett Allen said.

  • Bulls rookie Caleb Wilson says he’s going to try to lead, not blend in

Bulls rookie Caleb Wilson says he’s going to try to lead, not blend in

Chicago Bulls rookie Caleb Wilson aims to exceed expectations as a rookie.

CHICAGO (AP) — A second prominent Caleb could make a splash this season on the sports scene in Chicago.

Rookie Bulls forward Caleb Wilson is facing lofty expectations as the young centerpiece of the rebuilding NBA team, something now-injured quarterback Caleb Williams has been accomplishing with the NFL’s Bears.

And like Williams, whose prolific passing and nimble footwork led the Bears to an unexpected 11-6 record and division title last season, the 20-year-old Wilson seems to have arrived with a bit of a confident edge.

“Well in my opinion, there’s no leadership while blending in, so I’m definitely not going to try to blend in,” Wilson, the No. 4 overall pick in the NBA draft, said Monday at the Bulls’ media day. “I am going to go in there and try to lead by example.

“I feel like as a rookie, people respect actions more than respect voice or words. So I’ll let my actions lead.”

The Bulls are trying to climb from a 31-51 record in 2025-26 when they missed the playoffs for the fourth straight season. Chicago allowed 121.5 points per game, ranking 28th overall in the NBA.

The 6-foot-10 Wilson was considered possibly the most athletic player in the draft. Known for his finishing ability, the forward averaged 19.8 points and 9.4 rebounds in 24 games with North Carolina last season before it was cut short by left hand and right thumb injuries.

Wilson is good to go and has been impressing new first-year executive vice president of basketball operations Bryson Graham and new coach Tiago Splitter with his work ethic and willingness to learn as the team get its formal training underway.

“The expectations are probably pretty high because Caleb is pretty outspoken,” Graham said. “But internally we know that it’s a season of growth and development. We have to be OK with giving him grace throughout this year, because he’s going to have some ups and down.

“It’s exciting because Caleb has all the potential in the world and we just, kind of like, have to water that seed correctly. You know, in that time, it will sprout into something really beautiful.”

Wilson has been working on strength and conditioning to navigate NBA play. He and Splitter have yet to talk about a specific role, with both saying that will evolve. Wilson says he thinks Splitter, a 41-year-old from Brazil who played seven seasons in the NBA, will “allow him to go out there and play” and be direct if he need to make changes.

Wilson said he’s fluid about what he wants to accomplish as a rookie.

“I’m more of a process guy than an outcome guy,” he said. “That’s how I’ve been … just as of late because, you know, you can’t control the outcome of things if you don’t focus on the process.”

The Bulls are below the NBA’s salary cap and have room for additions. They signed 11-year veteran guard Norman Powell, an All-Star last season with Miami, to a two-year free-agent deal. Chicago also traded for 27-year-old center Nic Claxton and guard Buddy Hield, who is 33.

Graham said he could add more, depending on how much framework youngsters like Wilson, 22-year-old forward Matas Buzelis, No. 15 2026 draft pick Dailyn Swain and No. 12 2025 pick Noa Essengue need to experience success — and win a little now — as the Bulls build a foundation for long-term success.

“I think we accomplished some and we’re still in the game for others,” Graham said. “As you’re developing, you know, now I think it’s better to develop with a more competent roster.”

Point guard Josh Giddey, who directed an up-tempo game when healthy last season, said he’s not sure if he qualifies as a veteran since he’s still only 23, albeit entering his sixth season. Giddey set career highs last year with averages of 17 points, 8.3 rebounds and 9.1 assists in 54 games.

Giddey, who is fully recovered following right ankle surgery, also has been impressed by Wilson.

“It’s obviously a different kind of level when you play against real NBA talent in the regular season,” Giddey said. “But one thing he doesn’t lack is confidence.”

  • Julius Randle recalls lessons learned from Kobe Bryant as he aims to mentor young Nets teammates

Julius Randle recalls lessons learned from Kobe Bryant as he aims to mentor young Nets teammates

Now an NBA veteran, Julius Randle channels the lessons he learned as a rookie from Kobe Bryant to pass on.

NEW YORK (AP) — Julius Randle was instrumental in the revival of the New York Knicks before he was traded to Minnesota and helped the Timberwolves reach the Western Conference Finals.

Back in New York after being traded to the Brooklyn Nets, Randle quickly realized he was surrounded by young players who could benefit from his experience. It made him think back to his early NBA days with the Los Angeles Lakers as a teammate of Kobe Bryant.

“An example for me when I was that age earlier in my career, I had the best example you could have in Kobe,” Randle said Monday. “And I feel like those lessons and just that example that he set for me, that’s carried me throughout my career to where I can be here in Year 13 and I am still trying to improve every single day, get better every single day.”

Randle, 31, was acquired from the Timberwolves in a four-team trade that involved Charlotte sending LaMelo Ball to Minnesota. He raved about the Nets’ young nucleus, including 6-foot-8 guard Egor Dëmin, who is entering his second season, and guard Mikel Brown Jr., who was taken with the No. 6 pick in this year’s draft.

The Nets had an NBA-record five first-round picks in the 2025 Draft and went 20-62 last season. They have lost at least 50 games in each of their last three seasons.

But the Knicks had been terrible before Randle guided them to the 2021 NBA Playoffs after a seven-year drought. Getting the Nets to the postseason would require helping the young players grow up quickly, and the power forward noticed during a team-bonding summer golf outing in Dallas, his hometown, they needed to learn a thing or two.

“Well, they’re kids, first and foremost,” Randle said. “I learned that really, really fast on the golf course and third hole in they were trying to take their shirts off and it’s just like they didn’t understand golf etiquette.

“Mikel broke a club, a driver on one of the holes. I learned really fast that I am dealing with kids. They’re so eager to learn and get better. They’re obviously extremely talented.”

Brown said Randle’s story wasn’t true but Dëmin admitted they “broke a couple of clubs.”

Randle has already seen in pickup games how much they know on the court. He has been impressed with the way Brown, who played at Louisville, can “make every single read” in the pick-and-roll.

He is high on Dëmin’s athleticism and shooting efficiency, seeing how playing in Spain at a young age helped him transition his game to the NBA after one year at BYU.

Like other young players Randle has come across since Bryant’s death in 2020, both have asked about the two years he spent alongside the Hall of Famer after arriving in Los Angeles at 19 as the No. 7 pick in the 2014 draft.

“It’s the biggest blessing being around him and being able to carry those lessons into my daily life,” Randle said. “It’s become part of who I am, become part of my fabric and I try to carry. I get those questions all the time and when you’re around somebody that great and they teach you all that he’s taught me, the biggest thing I can do is pass it along.”

  • After a busy summer, Damian Lillard provides a steadying influence in Portland

Damian Lillard 2026 Media Day Press Conference

Damian Lillard speaks to the media at 2026 Portland Trail Blazers media day.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Portland Trail Blazers opened training camp with more than the usual turbulence in the background.

The one steadying factor? Damian Lillard is finally back.

Tom Dundon became the face of the Blazers’ new ownership group before the end of last season, when the team went to the playoffs for the first time in five years. In the offseason, the Blazers laid off more than 70 staffers.

Tiago Splitter, an assistant who was promoted to head coach last season, bolted for the Chicago Bulls, this summer. The Blazers hired Micah Nori, who was an assistant with the Timberwolves.

Nori said the anticipation of embarking on his first stint as a head coach was “like Christmas Eve.”

Portland surprised many in late June by trading Jerami Grant and Kris Murray to the Grizzlies in exchange for Morant, a two-time All-Star who had a rocky tenure in Memphis.

Morant, who averages 22.4 points per game, has played in just 79 games over the last three seasons because of injuries and suspensions.

Morant said he needed a fresh start “because everything that happened over the years pretty much was just stuck with me. Everybody keeps bringing them up. As long as Memphis was across my chest, it was still getting said.”

The addition of Morant made the Blazers’ roster unbalanced, but general manager Joe Cronin said he believes the point guard-heavy team with Morant, Lillard, Jrue Holiday and Scoot Henderson can work.

“There’s definite areas of strength, particularly at the guard, where we have a lot of very capable guys there, many of whom are best with the ball. So we understand that we have to figure out roles and touches and just the overall team dynamics of things, but I don’t feel like there’s a major deficit throughout our other positions,” Cronin said.

Lillard returns to play after a torn Achilles tendon sidelined him for all of last season. Last summer, Lillard rejoined the Blazers — where he played for his first 11 seasons — after a two-year stint with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Over the course of his career, Lillard has averaged 25.1 points and 6.7 assists. Now 36, Lillard doesn’t feel like he needs to log the heavy minutes he did in years past and aims to play with more joy this season.

He also said he’s excited about the addition of Morant and believes the balance on the court will work itself out.

“All of our careers have ups and down, it’s a journey on the court, off the court. It’s a journey ultimately. It’s how you respond to those experiences and the criticism and the highs — how you respond to it is important,” Lillard said. “And being around him, you see he’s a good dude, and you know, I consider myself a pretty good judge of character.”

Lillard also expressed hope the team would remain in Portland despite contentious negotiations with the city over a $600 million project to renovate the city-owned Moda Center, the league’s oldest arena, which hasn’t been refurbished.

The state has already approved $365 million toward the project, but it’s contingent on the city’s approval to contribute a share of the total. The deadline to reach a new lease agreement with the city is in December.

Team President Dewayne Hankins said the team is meeting twice a week with the city to resolve the remaining issues.

“We’re doing everything we can to ensure the Trail Blazers stay right here,” Hankins said.

The Blazers formally open training camp Tuesday ahead of the season opener on Oct. 21 at home against the Phoenix Suns.

  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Thunder still confident that they’ll be a contender, despite roster changes

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 2026 Media Day Press Conference

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander speaks to the media at 2026 Oklahoma City Thunder Media Day.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander paused when asked what he learned about himself and his game over the summer.

“I didn’t learn anything I didn’t already know,” he said. “I feel like I got better this summer, for sure.”

That’s great news for the Oklahoma City Thunder, a team that won the NBA title in 2025 and lost a Game 7 to the San Antonio Spurs in last season’s Western Conference Finals. Gilgeous-Alexander — bidding for a third straight MVP award — and the Thunder are widely expected to be top contenders for a title again this season.

But it is a new-look Thunder in many ways, after the team traded starter Lu Dort and key reserves Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins to shed salary.

“Obviously we’re a really close, tight-knit group, and those guys had a big hand in not only our success on the court but the relationships and the brotherhood off the court,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “And that will never change. Those guys will only be one call away from me and vice versa. But with that being said, it’s the business of the NBA, right. I don’t think anybody has played with all 12 guys their whole career. That’s how it goes.”

Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.1 points last season and could become the first player in four decades to win three consecutive MVP awards. Larry Bird (1984-1986) was the last player to do it; Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain are the only other members of the three-in-a-row club.

Gilgeous-Alexander said he hasn’t given much thought to winning another award.

“The decision for MVP is like literally 82 games away,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “I’m not going to win the award in the first week of the season. It hard for me to, like, put so much into it and think about it. I’ve just got to be the best player I can be for this basketball team, win as many games as possible. And whenever those things lie, they will. That kind of recipe for me in the past has kind of worked, and I’ve been fortunate to win two in a row.”

There is an addition of sorts: Jalen Williams, an All-Star two seasons ago, is back after missing more than half of last season with injuries.

“We’ll have an All-NBA talent who puts the ball in the basket and guards 1 through 5. So, that will make life easier not only for myself but for the rest of the group,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “And above all, I’m just excited for Dub to be able to play.”

Forward Chet Holmgren averaged career-highs of 17.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, making All-NBA and All-Defensive teams for the first time. Jared McCain, Ajay Mitchell and Cason Wallace are all expected to take on larger roles this season.

“Fundamentally, we are still the Oklahoma City Thunder,” guard Alex Caruso said. “To the root of it, I think we want to try and be the same team, we just have to fit new pieces in and figure out what that looks like. Still have a lot of returning guys. It’s not like we lost our three top scorers or something. … We want to be the same kind of team and have the same principles and play the same way.”

  • Haunted by NBA Finals defeat, Victor Wembanyama, Spurs driven to complete mission of being league’s best

Haunted by NBA Finals defeat, Victor Wembanyama, Spurs driven to complete mission of being league’s best

The Spurs are looking to redeem themselves after falling short in the 2026 NBA Finals.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — San Antonio star Victor Wembanyama spent many uneasy nights this offseason revisiting the Spurs’ loss to the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals.

For an athlete fully committed to a regimented schedule of diet, exercise and a preferred bedtime of 9 p.m., the restless evenings were telling.

Wembanyama was hurting. So, Victor did what Victor does.

The 7-foot-4 center worked feverishly in the offseason, including another unorthodox training excursion to improve his body, mind and spirit.

Did it help him recover from the heartbreaking defeat?

“I can’t answer that question because it’s not over,” Wembanyama said Monday during San Antonio’s media day.

“It evolves with time. I’ve had a few sleepless nights, maybe not sleepless nights, but hard to find sleep sometimes or hard emotions, hunting sometimes. But the reason is just a point where you accept that you have to go through it and you have to feel all of it. And we don’t want to hide from anything. So, we’re going to face these emotions, face the reality that we have a hundred games to play, 100 plus (including the postseason), and this is the reality of it. We’re in a great spot. We’re very hopeful, very ambitious, and we’re ready.”

The recovery process included spending time with friends, but in Wembanyama’s own disciplined way. He invited teammates to Paris in August for a series of workouts.

“Obviously we have to go through some emotions and you do some of that alone, but it’s great to do as a team,” Wembanyama said. “I think a lot of positive things of everything we did this summer, just being together, honestly, it was amazing. Especially Paris for me, that was really touching, pretty emotional for me. So, yeah, this is a great positive.”

Wembanyama put his hand over his heart when speaking of the Spurs time in Paris, emphasizing it’s importance. It moved his teammates, too.

“Obviously, it’s good to take a break, but just having all the guys in one room again and just breaking bread with each other was probably the best thing about being in Paris,” Spurs point guard Dylan Harper said. “I feel, like, for on the court, I mean, you hang out off the court, you get comfortable around your teammates, it allows you to be vulnerable. It allows you to say what’s on your mind and no one else is taking it the wrong way. I think for us the biggest thing is accountability and I feel like every day, no matter what setting we’re in, we’re always going to hold each other to the same standard.”

Shortly after those workouts, Wembanyama trained with French rugby club Provence Rugby in Aix-en-Provence to improve his footing, lower-body strength and ability to absorb physical contact. The rugby workouts are not unusual given Wembanyama’s curious nature, which led him to spend two weeks training at the Shaolin Temple in China last offseason.

“The training itself was really hard,” Wembanyama said of working with Provence. “I think it was really good for the vestibular system and new movement patterns and new ways to develop strength as well.”

Since Wembanyama was drafted No. 1 in 2023, he has made it clear that his and San Antonio’s benchmark is to be the best. Still, few expected a youthful roster led by the 22-year-old Wembanyama to reach the NBA Finals last season, but that didn’t make the loss less painful for the Spurs.

Wembanyama averaged 26 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.6 blocks against New York, but San Antonio lost in five games.

San Antonio blew double-digit leads in every loss, including Game 4 when New York overcame a 29-point deficit and staged the largest comeback in NBA Finals history in a 107-106 victory.

For the Spurs and their fans, it was a painful reminder of the 2013 NBA Finals when San Antonio lost a five-point lead in the final 28 seconds of Game 6 to lose to Miami. The Heat won Game 7 to rally from a 3-2 series deficit and beat the Spurs.

Hall of Fame coach Gregg Popovich famously used the heartbreak of 2013 to fuel the Spurs’ relentless drive to win the 2014 championship.

Only time will tell if history will repeat, but San Antonio is again using a Finals loss as motivation.

“We made it to the place we wanted to get to, but obviously we need to win,” Spurs forward Julian Champagnie said. “However anybody looks at it, I feel like we’ve got an opportunity to do the same thing over again and go back and control the controllables. I feel like that’s kind of where we are. So, I think that we’ll definitely use this past year in helping us push past a lot of stuff this year and get to where we want to get to.”

The loss is heartbreaking, but defeat could spur Wembanyama to win it all.

“I couldn’t imagine better motivation,” he said.
