  • After a busy summer, Damian Lillard provides a steadying influence in Portland

Damian Lillard 2026 Media Day Press Conference

Damian Lillard speaks to the media at 2026 Portland Trail Blazers media day.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Portland Trail Blazers opened training camp with more than the usual turbulence in the background.

The one steadying factor? Damian Lillard is finally back.

Tom Dundon became the face of the Blazers’ new ownership group before the end of last season, when the team went to the playoffs for the first time in five years. In the offseason, the Blazers laid off more than 70 staffers.

Tiago Splitter, an assistant who was promoted to head coach last season, bolted for the Chicago Bulls, this summer. The Blazers hired Micah Nori, who was an assistant with the Timberwolves.

Nori said the anticipation of embarking on his first stint as a head coach was “like Christmas Eve.”

Portland surprised many in late June by trading Jerami Grant and Kris Murray to the Grizzlies in exchange for Morant, a two-time All-Star who had a rocky tenure in Memphis.

Morant, who averages 22.4 points per game, has played in just 79 games over the last three seasons because of injuries and suspensions.

Morant said he needed a fresh start “because everything that happened over the years pretty much was just stuck with me. Everybody keeps bringing them up. As long as Memphis was across my chest, it was still getting said.”

The addition of Morant made the Blazers’ roster unbalanced, but general manager Joe Cronin said he believes the point guard-heavy team with Morant, Lillard, Jrue Holiday and Scoot Henderson can work.

“There’s definite areas of strength, particularly at the guard, where we have a lot of very capable guys there, many of whom are best with the ball. So we understand that we have to figure out roles and touches and just the overall team dynamics of things, but I don’t feel like there’s a major deficit throughout our other positions,” Cronin said.

Lillard returns to play after a torn Achilles tendon sidelined him for all of last season. Last summer, Lillard rejoined the Blazers — where he played for his first 11 seasons — after a two-year stint with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Over the course of his career, Lillard has averaged 25.1 points and 6.7 assists. Now 36, Lillard doesn’t feel like he needs to log the heavy minutes he did in years past and aims to play with more joy this season.

He also said he’s excited about the addition of Morant and believes the balance on the court will work itself out.

“All of our careers have ups and down, it’s a journey on the court, off the court. It’s a journey ultimately. It’s how you respond to those experiences and the criticism and the highs — how you respond to it is important,” Lillard said. “And being around him, you see he’s a good dude, and you know, I consider myself a pretty good judge of character.”

Lillard also expressed hope the team would remain in Portland despite contentious negotiations with the city over a $600 million project to renovate the city-owned Moda Center, the league’s oldest arena, which hasn’t been refurbished.

The state has already approved $365 million toward the project, but it’s contingent on the city’s approval to contribute a share of the total. The deadline to reach a new lease agreement with the city is in December.

Team President Dewayne Hankins said the team is meeting twice a week with the city to resolve the remaining issues.

“We’re doing everything we can to ensure the Trail Blazers stay right here,” Hankins said.

The Blazers formally open training camp Tuesday ahead of the season opener on Oct. 21 at home against the Phoenix Suns.

  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Thunder still confident that they’ll be a contender, despite roster changes

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 2026 Media Day Press Conference

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander speaks to the media at 2026 Oklahoma City Thunder Media Day.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander paused when asked what he learned about himself and his game over the summer.

“I didn’t learn anything I didn’t already know,” he said. “I feel like I got better this summer, for sure.”

That’s great news for the Oklahoma City Thunder, a team that won the NBA title in 2025 and lost a Game 7 to the San Antonio Spurs in last season’s Western Conference Finals. Gilgeous-Alexander — bidding for a third straight MVP award — and the Thunder are widely expected to be top contenders for a title again this season.

But it is a new-look Thunder in many ways, after the team traded starter Lu Dort and key reserves Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins to shed salary.

“Obviously we’re a really close, tight-knit group, and those guys had a big hand in not only our success on the court but the relationships and the brotherhood off the court,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “And that will never change. Those guys will only be one call away from me and vice versa. But with that being said, it’s the business of the NBA, right. I don’t think anybody has played with all 12 guys their whole career. That’s how it goes.”

Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.1 points last season and could become the first player in four decades to win three consecutive MVP awards. Larry Bird (1984-1986) was the last player to do it; Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain are the only other members of the three-in-a-row club.

Gilgeous-Alexander said he hasn’t given much thought to winning another award.

“The decision for MVP is like literally 82 games away,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “I’m not going to win the award in the first week of the season. It hard for me to, like, put so much into it and think about it. I’ve just got to be the best player I can be for this basketball team, win as many games as possible. And whenever those things lie, they will. That kind of recipe for me in the past has kind of worked, and I’ve been fortunate to win two in a row.”

There is an addition of sorts: Jalen Williams, an All-Star two seasons ago, is back after missing more than half of last season with injuries.

“We’ll have an All-NBA talent who puts the ball in the basket and guards 1 through 5. So, that will make life easier not only for myself but for the rest of the group,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “And above all, I’m just excited for Dub to be able to play.”

Forward Chet Holmgren averaged career-highs of 17.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, making All-NBA and All-Defensive teams for the first time. Jared McCain, Ajay Mitchell and Cason Wallace are all expected to take on larger roles this season.

“Fundamentally, we are still the Oklahoma City Thunder,” guard Alex Caruso said. “To the root of it, I think we want to try and be the same team, we just have to fit new pieces in and figure out what that looks like. Still have a lot of returning guys. It’s not like we lost our three top scorers or something. … We want to be the same kind of team and have the same principles and play the same way.”

  • Haunted by NBA Finals defeat, Victor Wembanyama, Spurs driven to complete mission of being league’s best

Haunted by NBA Finals defeat, Victor Wembanyama, Spurs driven to complete mission of being league’s best

The Spurs are looking to redeem themselves after falling short in the 2026 NBA Finals.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — San Antonio star Victor Wembanyama spent many uneasy nights this offseason revisiting the Spurs’ loss to the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals.

For an athlete fully committed to a regimented schedule of diet, exercise and a preferred bedtime of 9 p.m., the restless evenings were telling.

Wembanyama was hurting. So, Victor did what Victor does.

The 7-foot-4 center worked feverishly in the offseason, including another unorthodox training excursion to improve his body, mind and spirit.

Did it help him recover from the heartbreaking defeat?

“I can’t answer that question because it’s not over,” Wembanyama said Monday during San Antonio’s media day.

“It evolves with time. I’ve had a few sleepless nights, maybe not sleepless nights, but hard to find sleep sometimes or hard emotions, hunting sometimes. But the reason is just a point where you accept that you have to go through it and you have to feel all of it. And we don’t want to hide from anything. So, we’re going to face these emotions, face the reality that we have a hundred games to play, 100 plus (including the postseason), and this is the reality of it. We’re in a great spot. We’re very hopeful, very ambitious, and we’re ready.”

The recovery process included spending time with friends, but in Wembanyama’s own disciplined way. He invited teammates to Paris in August for a series of workouts.

“Obviously we have to go through some emotions and you do some of that alone, but it’s great to do as a team,” Wembanyama said. “I think a lot of positive things of everything we did this summer, just being together, honestly, it was amazing. Especially Paris for me, that was really touching, pretty emotional for me. So, yeah, this is a great positive.”

Wembanyama put his hand over his heart when speaking of the Spurs time in Paris, emphasizing it’s importance. It moved his teammates, too.

“Obviously, it’s good to take a break, but just having all the guys in one room again and just breaking bread with each other was probably the best thing about being in Paris,” Spurs point guard Dylan Harper said. “I feel, like, for on the court, I mean, you hang out off the court, you get comfortable around your teammates, it allows you to be vulnerable. It allows you to say what’s on your mind and no one else is taking it the wrong way. I think for us the biggest thing is accountability and I feel like every day, no matter what setting we’re in, we’re always going to hold each other to the same standard.”

Shortly after those workouts, Wembanyama trained with French rugby club Provence Rugby in Aix-en-Provence to improve his footing, lower-body strength and ability to absorb physical contact. The rugby workouts are not unusual given Wembanyama’s curious nature, which led him to spend two weeks training at the Shaolin Temple in China last offseason.

“The training itself was really hard,” Wembanyama said of working with Provence. “I think it was really good for the vestibular system and new movement patterns and new ways to develop strength as well.”

Since Wembanyama was drafted No. 1 in 2023, he has made it clear that his and San Antonio’s benchmark is to be the best. Still, few expected a youthful roster led by the 22-year-old Wembanyama to reach the NBA Finals last season, but that didn’t make the loss less painful for the Spurs.

Wembanyama averaged 26 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.6 blocks against New York, but San Antonio lost in five games.

San Antonio blew double-digit leads in every loss, including Game 4 when New York overcame a 29-point deficit and staged the largest comeback in NBA Finals history in a 107-106 victory.

For the Spurs and their fans, it was a painful reminder of the 2013 NBA Finals when San Antonio lost a five-point lead in the final 28 seconds of Game 6 to lose to Miami. The Heat won Game 7 to rally from a 3-2 series deficit and beat the Spurs.

Hall of Fame coach Gregg Popovich famously used the heartbreak of 2013 to fuel the Spurs’ relentless drive to win the 2014 championship.

Only time will tell if history will repeat, but San Antonio is again using a Finals loss as motivation.

“We made it to the place we wanted to get to, but obviously we need to win,” Spurs forward Julian Champagnie said. “However anybody looks at it, I feel like we’ve got an opportunity to do the same thing over again and go back and control the controllables. I feel like that’s kind of where we are. So, I think that we’ll definitely use this past year in helping us push past a lot of stuff this year and get to where we want to get to.”

The loss is heartbreaking, but defeat could spur Wembanyama to win it all.

“I couldn’t imagine better motivation,” he said.

  • Brandon Ingram’s Clippers debut on hold after heel surgery, partial Achilles tear

Brandon Ingram speaks to the media at 2026 LA Clippers Media Day.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Brandon Ingram’s debut with the LA Clippers will be delayed as he recovers from surgery for a right heel injury and partially torn Achilles tendon.

There’s no timetable for the two-time All-Star forward to resume playing. He came to the Clippers as part of the Kawhi Leonard trade to Toronto earlier in September. Ingram missed the final two games of the Raptors’ first-round loss to Cleveland because of the heel injury.

“My recovery has been going good,” Ingram said Monday at media day. “I won’t be participating in training camp much but I will be out there a little bit.”

Interim president of basketball operations Trent Redden said doctors discovered and addressed the previously undisclosed Achilles injury while Ingram underwent surgery on his heel in May.

“It wasn’t until we got our hands on (Ingram) here that we started to see where he was at with his progression,” Redden said. “He won’t be ready for the start of the season, and we’ll reevaluate when we get there.”

Ingram averaged 21.5 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists for the Raptors last season.

Redden said guard Bradley Beal is dealing with right knee inflammation and won’t be available for the start of training camp, which opens Tuesday in Hawaii.

Beal missed all but six games last season after having surgery to repair a broken left hip in November.

Jordan Miller tore his left rotator cuff during a summer pickup game and had surgery. He’ll be reevaluated in five months.

Yanic Konan Niederäauser won’t be ready for the season opener as he recovers from a ligament tear in his foot that ended his season in March.

  • 5 takeaways: Stephen Curry embraces new season at Warriors Media Day

SAN FRANCISCO — The Warriors had a busy Monday, starting the morning in the Bay Area with its annual media day before boarding a flight in the afternoon to head to Hawaii to open training camp Tuesday morning.

Chase Center saw some familiar faces in head coach Steve Kerr and veterans Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Al Horford and Jimmy Butler III at the microphone. But the message was not as familiar. Rather than talk of “chasing a championship,” the discussion surrounded “reimagining our team” and “focusing on the process.”

The Warriors already knew they are starting the season shorthanded while Butler and Moses Moody continue to recover from knee injuries suffered last season. But they were dealt another blow on the eve of media day, which General Manager Mike Dunleavy revealed to open the morning.

    1. Porziņģis to miss start of training camp

Dunleavy was the opening speaker at media day and wasted no time in dropping some breaking news: Kristaps Porziņģis is “out indefinitely with a health issue.”

Dunleavy added that he was informed about the issue on Sunday and that Porziņģis will not accompany the team to Hawaii for the opening of training camp. He added that Porziņģis had been at the Warriors facility in the past week and was cleared for participation at the time.

“I just got word of it yesterday,” said Dunleavy. “He finished the season last year, and he was in last week doing well and everything. Again, I don’t have a timeline on it. Hopefully he’ll be back soon, but this is something we just found out.”

Porziņģis has navigated a variety of health issues over the past few seasons — from the end of his run in Boston, his brief stint in Atlanta and following his arrival in Golden State at February’s trade deadline. Dunleavy would not speculate whether this health issue is related to the postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) Porziņģis had dealt with in the past.

Horford, who was a teammate of Porziņģis in Boston and now Golden State, stressed patience as Porziņģis recovers.

“It’s definitely challenging and difficult to deal with that,” said Horford. “I know he wants to compete, and he wants to be out on the court. It’s just for him to be patient at this point, and he’s usually been able to overcome things, but patience is kind of like the name of the game right now … I just hope that he’s able to recover and be in a good place so he can roll with us.”

With Porziņģis sidelined, more responsibility will fall on Horford, Green and rookie Yaxel Lendeborg on the Warriors’ frontline.

    2. No timeline for Butler, Moody returns following knee injuries

Butler III (ACL) and Moody (patella), who are both recovering from knee surgeries, will both make the trip to Hawaii with the team as they continue their respective rehabilitations. While no timeline has been given for their returns, Dunleavy said both players are in a good spot and doing “very light on-court activities” at this point.

“They’re progressing well,” Dunleavy said. “It’s hard to determine exactly when they’ll be back at this stage of the rehab because it really comes down to how you’re doing each day, so I won’t get into those phases right now, but it’s tricky. Forget one, but having two guys that aren’t going to be ready to start the season that are key rotation players, really good players, wings that are such a valuable position in the league.

“We’re in a bind in that regard, but I think we’ve done the best we could at improving the roster to a point where we have some depth and we could hold down the fort until those guys get back. Hopefully when they do get back, it will give us a nice boost.”

In addition to being with the team throughout training camp in Hawaii, Butler recently hosted a players-only multi-day minicamp at his home in San Diego for his Warriors teammates to help the team get ready for the upcoming season.

“They’re a part of our squad, and their energy is going to be key for us even until they get back on the court,” said Curry. “I don’t know how many games will be under our belt before they each come back, and we have a job to do to hopefully make their return relevant and meaningful in the sense that the team that they’re coming back to.”

Butler, who said he added a few extra piercings during his time rehabbing, donned some flashy earrings as he took the mic on media day, while vowing to return to the court better than how he left it.

“I feel great. Rehabbing every day. I’m to a point now where I get to start running a little bit,” he said. “I can dunk a basketball, in case anybody wants to know. Very excited about that. But it’s still a process, but at least I get to play basketball a little bit now, and I know that all the work that I have been putting in, it’s starting to get to basketball.

“I know that I will return still being able to play at a high level, but I want to hoop now. I wanted to hoop two months ago, three months ago. I want to go out there and compete with my guys, with Dray, be Robin again to Steph’s Batman. I know I will be able to do that at an incredibly high level, but I just miss the game. I miss not being around my guys. So any time I get to be around them and laugh, joke, compete in ways that I can’t compete, it’s all a plus for me.”

    3. No sleep lost on Steph Curry’s extension

There was no drama this summer when it came to re-signing Curry and keeping the league’s all-time 3-point king in the same uniform he’s worn for the past 17 seasons.

“I’ve lost sleep on a lot of things. That is not one of them,” said Dunleavy. “He’s a guy that’s committed to the organization. He wants to be here. He believes in our ability to put together a great team.”

Curry signed a two-year, $116 million extension on Friday, after what he described as a collaborative effort since he became eligible to sign an extension in late August. Curry ended up taking $10 million less than the maximum he could have signed for in order to provide the team flexibility moving forward.

“Without knowing the answers to the test, it was my best way to study for it, if that makes sense,” said Curry. “Again, it’s about for us to have a chance this season as we get started tomorrow to play basketball and hoop. We all have to do our jobs to win. We all know that, myself included. I’ve got to be healthy and available.

“Yes, I was presented the max. Yes, there was everything on the table and everything that you probably heard is somewhat accurate. For me it was just processing all of that to get to a decision that was right for me and right for the team.”

Curry is in a rare position to play two decades for the same team, something only matched by Kobe Bryant with the Lakers, Dirk Nowitzki with the Mavs, and Udonis Haslem with the Heat. Curry’s connection with the Bay Area was a motivating factor in getting this extension done.

“This is home,” he said. “This is what we’ve built. This is a community that I’ve played in front of my entire career, and being able to finish the story the right way is a big part of what I can control thankfully and hopefully health-wise as well.

“I know the short list of guys that have been able to do it, but reimagining what that looks like with the level that I feel like I can play at down the stretch of my career, and being open to even what this training camp looks like of different ways to approach the game to, sustain it as long as I can.

“There’s a pride of representing the Bay, representing this franchise that when I stepped foot here in ’09 and what we’ve all been able to accomplish – this isn’t just a me thing, this is a we – I want to do right by that. It’s always been an importance for me, and going into this contract decision, that was front of mind, for sure.”

    4. Happy to be under the radar, just not too far

The Warriors are the last dynasty that the NBA has seen, winning four titles in an eight-year span from 2015-22. Golden State is the last team to repeat as NBA champs as the league has seen eight different champions in the past eight seasons.

After beginning each season with title expectations for over a decade, the Warriors enter a season without the weight of those expectations as they begin a 2026-27 campaign at less than full strength and with more clear-cut title favorites in the Western Conference.

“Yeah, I don’t mind the fact that everyone is picking us to miss the playoffs. That’s not a bad spot to be in as a team, as a coach,” said Kerr. “For me, what it means is we get to focus on the process. We just get to lock in on what we’re trying to accomplish right from Day 1. Tomorrow morning we’ll have a meeting with the team, and we’ll lay out our expectations, our vision.

“I feel strongly that if we just lock in on the process, the details, we’re much more likely to be able to accomplish what we want to accomplish and put together momentum and build an identity and cut back on our turnovers, win the game in the margins. Those things aren’t going to happen just by talking about them. They’re only going to happen if we have a solid process day after day and develop into that team.

Perhaps the funniest moment of the day was Curry’s reaction to Kerr’s claim that “everyone is picking us to miss the playoffs.”

If the measure of success in the past was championship or bust, then how will the Warriors measure success in 2026-27? Green made it clear that the goal is centered on the process, and the results will take care of themselves.

“I think for us it’s ultimately putting together a great process every single day because if you do that, you give yourself a chance. All anybody ever wants in this league is a chance.

“Your process must be the right way, and I think for us that’s what it is. We never got to an end of the year and won a championship and was, like, ‘Oh, that was great!’ because we won a championship. No, it was great because I enjoyed the journey, and it’s great because we overcame this thing and remember when this happened and we had to do this to get – that’s what makes it great.

“So for us, put together a great process and then you get to the end, and you let the cards fall where they may. I hate to be cliche, but in 2022 nobody walked into that season like, ‘Hey, here’s the beginning of a championship year.’ Our process was great, which then allowed us to grow over the season and become a championship team.

    5. Excitement, expectations for rookie Yaxel Lendeborg

From his general manager, to his head coach and his new teammates, rookie forward Yaxel Lendeborg earned universal praise for his attitude, work ethic, and the versatility of his game as he looks to inject new life into the Warriors.

“He just does everything really well,” said Kerr. “He’s a really good passer, but he has a good feel for the game. You know, he asked me a couple of months ago, ‘how can I earn the respect of the veterans?’ I’m, like, ‘well, that question alone is a good start.’ The fact that he’s thinking that way.”

One of those veterans is Michigan State alum Green, who couldn’t help but bring up the rivalry with Michigan’s Lendeborg, when discussing the rookie.

“When he was at that bum school, I didn’t care to watch him,” said Green. “Playing against Michigan State, I actually hope you miss every shot. So I’m not really watching from a standpoint of, like, ‘Yo, how good is he?’ I’m watching and hoping he fails. That changed now obviously, and he is really good. I actually hate to say it because that means he was really good last year at Michigan. Who wants that, right? But I was – man, I was very, very, very impressed.”

The Warriors got a taste of what the Curry, Green and Lendeborg trio could look like at Butler’s minicamp in San Diego. There was one particular play that had everyone excited for what’s to come this season.

“We had a very nice play. It looked like we had been playing together for a long time,” said Green. “An out-of-bounds play, somebody threw me the ball. Steph back-picked it. [Yaxel] didn’t know he should go off. He went off, boom, dunk. That’s going to happen a lot.”

“It was an out-of-bounds play,” Lendeborg said. “It happened – I had a wide-open dunk. They were both like, ‘That’s all year! All year!’ Super loud and aggressive. Like, ‘Oh, wow, okay.’ If it’s going to be like that, then it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Lendeborg’s combination of size, skill, versatility and IQ should make him a seamless fit next to Golden State’s veterans, whether that is in a starting role or coming off the bench — something Kerr will decide in training camp.

“Whenever you bring in younger guys, they all just want to get busy and get to it right away scoring and doing all of these things, and he can do that at a high level, but all the questions that he asks, it’s about how I can help to win, and that’s what you get whenever you get a guy that’s played in college a couple of years. They know what it takes to win.”

Of course, Lendeborg proved he could win by leading Michigan to the NCAA title in April. Horford, who won two NCAA championships at Florida, knows that Lendeborg’s experience on the biggest collegiate stage will prepare him for the NBA.

“You can’t replicate in the NBA a Sweet 16, an Elite 8 game, those settings, the meaning of it, the pressure behind it,” said Horford. “I feel like he’s going to be able to come in and he’s going to be able to handle a lot of the things that are going to be thrown at him, and I just think that experience is just very valuable.”

Keyonte George, Lauri Markkanen, Darryn Peterson and more participate in Reddit AMA.

Players from the Utah Jazz participated in a Reddit AMA during 2026 Media Day as they gear up for another season.

Check out the answers from Keyonte George, Lauri Markkanen, Darryn Peterson and more.

Question: What’s one skill you’d like to add from anyone in the league and why?

[Andrew] Nembhard, obviously a lot of guys have the bump middy, but just the way he’s able to get past his guy, and then as smaller guards, being able to bump somebody off that far is pretty tough. He got the type of swagger with him…  I definitely want to take the little bump from Nembhard for sure.

    —Keyonte George

What’s one skill you’d like to add from anyone in the league and why?

Probably the IQ and vision from (Nikola) Jokić.

    —Lauri Markkanen

What’s your favorite cities to play in around the NBA, and why?

There’s a lot of cities that I like to play in, but I feel like it’s always fun to go to New York and play in The Garden, obviously now the defending champions, so it’s going to be a great challenge for us, but that’s a fun place to play.

    —Lauri Markkanen

For everyone: Who would win in a team competition of HORSE? Is there a trick shot master on the team?

Me, A half court shot backwards.

    —Josh Okogie

What aspect of your game do you think you’ve improved the most in?

I think really the main thing for me was, you know, my mental.  So just working on different mental skills… making sure I’m, you know, present where I’m at, where my feet are at, not being worried about what happened before… staying even-keel, so that’s really the main thing I’ve been working on, obviously, try to sharpen up your tools, jump shot, mid-range game, floaters, get in shape like I said, working your footwork, but yeah, for me it was, you know, really the mental piece.

    —Keyonte George

Who on this roster has one basketball skill that is way better than fans realize?

“[Center Jusuf Nurkić] got a trey ball, I think I knew that.  I feel like I’ve been playing against Nurk for a while, but yeah, he’s got a tray ball.”

    —Jaren Jackson Jr.

What teams and/or players are the absolute most frustrating to defend or be defended by, or just play against in general?

“Who I would say is frustrating to defend.  I would probably say Steph Curry cause you’re going to have to run 5 miles and … hit a billion screens, so it’s kind of frustrating.  And somebody that is frustrating to get defended by, Probably I would say … oh my little bro, my little bro Amen Thompson, my little bro yeah yeah my little bro.

    —Josh Okogie

How are the vibes? It seems like this group that really gets along, and I think everyone bonding as teammates is an extremely underrated part of any NBA roster.

“Oh, for sure, vibes are great.  Obviously we have a great group of guys…It’s a great mix of younger and older guys, and I feel like everybody’s on the same page and yeah…it’s been a great experience.  Everybody likes each other, everybody likes to play with each other and… it’s been great, the vibes are very high.

    —Svi Mykhailiuk

JJJ – what are you most excited to bring to your new team? Anything you learned from your time in Memphis that you think will help make an immediate impact?

I’m excited to bring energy every day, leadership, experience, defense, playing hard, versatility.  I think everything I’ve learned from my first 8 years in Memphis will help me.

    —Jaren Jackson Jr.

I wonder if Lauri or Jaren have any extra stories to tell during their time in Helsinki that weren’t shown on camera.

Helsinki was a lot of saunas, jumping in the cold ocean or lake or water.  What was it?  I don’t even know something.  I was jumping in something.  It was cold, Yeah, like over and over again, basically not sleeping. Going to Lyle’s game, that was cool.  Eating soft serve, walking around with Ryan and Will and Key for hours, passing all these different … felt like monuments, but they’re just regular to them, and they’re the nicest people in the world ranked, like they’re like the happiest or something like that.  It’s cool.

    —Jaren Jackson Jr.

For Keyonte — what recent changes have you made to better take care of your body and improve physical performance?

Yeah, I think, I’ve started to kind of find the, the pocket of time where I need to really start getting back the right habits when I’m when I’m eating and stuff, so I obviously take our trips and you know I think for me now after I come back from my trip, that’s when I lock in on my eating habits.  I mean I feel like for the most part all summer … I don’t really get out of shape.  I try to stay in shape throughout the whole year – just for my health in general.  I think the changes I kind of made was with the food obviously being more intentional with fresh pressed juices, water intake, stuff like that I’m being real intentional with that.

    —Keyonte George

Lauri, what’s it like mentoring young guys like Ace and Darryn?

Yeah, since I’m the old guy now, it kind of feels weird to be on this spot.  I feel like I was just in their shoes a couple of years ago, but It’s amazing, they’re willing to learn, they’re hard workers, and they come in every day with an open mindset and trying to learn, so that’s been really easy.

    —Lauri Markkanen

What’s the most points you’ve scored before making the NBA? (International, high school, college, middle school, or even before lol)

The most points I scored in my life was 57 in middle school.  It was a good game.

    —Isaiah Collier

How do you feel about the current roster? Will it be a top 6 seed in the West?

I think we have a great group of guys, you know, I really enjoyed being around them the last couple weeks.  You know, I think the best way to go into season with no expectations, just continue to build our chemistry and building an identity on the court, and I think we’ll be ready to go.

    —Josh Green

Lauri: You’ve yet to play in the playoffs. Why do you think this might be the year you break through?

Just the vibe in the facility.  I feel like everybody’s been locked in the whole summer.  We have a great team, great coaching staff, and I think we’re ready to go and we’re trying to get off to a good start and hopefully we can keep that up.

    —Lauri Markkanen

What’s your favorite thing about living in Utah?

My favorite thing about Utah is definitely like the outdoor scene.  I feel like there’s endless stuff to do, like hiking, paddleboarding, you know, ATVs, stuff like that…but, yeah, things that I enjoyed doing, fishing, stuff like that, and it’s pretty cool, also the scenery too.

    —Brice Sensabaugh

Who is one player in the league that ‘deserves their flowers’ and why?

Shout out my dog, Naji Marshall, man. He’s king of the floater, that’s my dog.  I’ve known him since like sophomore year of high school.

    —Jaxson Hayes

Who on this roster has one basketball skill that is way better than fans realize?

I think one thing that stuck out to me this summer is Darryn Peterson’s ability to block jump shots.  I think that’s kind of like something that most people can’t really do…you know, few and far between kind of thing. His ability to get off the ground like, as somebody shooting a jump shot and get to it is pretty impressive.

    —Brice Sensabaugh

What aspect of your game do you think you’ve improved the most in?

I think just my general knowledge of the game. This has been the offseason where I spent the most time playing actual 5-on-5 as opposed to doing 1-on-1 workouts, and, you know, the 1-on-1 workouts is great for just skill … but I think I’m at a point in my career where just X’s and O’s knowledge and just synergy and just how the game flows is more important.

    —Mo Bamba

How are the vibes? It seems like this group really gets along, and I think everyone bonding as teammates is an extremely underrated part of any NBA roster.

Vibes are always high here in Utah.  Just the the fan base, the environment, you know, it’s super cool because I didn’t really expect this when I first got here, but, you know, they really welcome you.  This community welcomes you like … you were born and raised here, and it’s really cool to be able to play in front of them where they show so much love.

    —Kyle Filipowski

Who on this roster has one basketball skill that is way better than fans realize?

Jaren Jackson Jr. with his offhand.  He uses his left hand a lot and a lot of floaters, a lot of touch shots…so I feel like that and his offhand.

    —Harrison Ingram

What’s one skill you’d like to add from anyone in the league and why?

Past or present?  I would go with Jamal Crawford’s handles, that’s been my favorite player of all time, so Jamal Crawford handles at my size would be insane.

    —Jonas Aidoo

For Ace – How much do you desire to be the Franchise player? What’s your drive to be the top top top (All NBA honors, MVP, All-Defensive Team) basketball player? And where are you at in terms of the confidence of getting on the rim , inviting contact and drawing fouls?

Confidence is growing every day … but it’s very important for me to be a franchise player. I mean, that’s every kid’s goal … from just watching the Michael Jordans, the Kevin Durants, even if it takes time like James Harden, so it’s very important.

    —Ace Bailey

For Darryn Peterson – How did you feel when you heard the NBA Commissioner call your name 2nd overall?

It was crazy, my first thought was just let me hurry up and get to my mom cause I know she was about to start crying, so I gave her that hug. Went around the table, then I walk up to the stage. It was just like a deep breath, like super refreshing for me because I worked super hard my entire life to get there, so it felt great.

    —Darryn Peterson

For Darryn – What’s the bar to make this a successful season for you?

A ton of wins. That’s what success is to me, just winning games and having an impact on every game.

    —Darryn Peterson

For Darryn – Who are you most looking forward to play against in the NBA?

LeBron [James], D-Book [Devin Booker], Luka [Dončić], Shai [Gilgeous-Alexander], Ant [Edwards]. Those guys come to mind.

    —Darryn Peterson

Darryn, what did you know about the Jazz before getting drafted here? Also, does having two All-Star-level bigs on the roster change the way you approach the game at all?

After the Lottery, I looked into the teams at the top, did some research and it’s crazy because I said I would fit the best with Utah, so it’s crazy that they ended up taking me. Two All-Star bigs is huge for me, two vets that I can count on and ask questions.  Obviously, I want to be an All-Star one day, so trying to figure out how to do that.

    —Darryn Peterson
