El influencer seleccionó al defensor como el jugador menos mediático de la cita mundialista, cuando este apenas superaba los cinco mil seguidores en Instagram.
Tras la movilización digital, el futbolista alcanzó cerca de seis millones de seguidores, transformándose en una de las figuras más comentadas del certamen que marca el regreso de los “All Whites” tras 15 años de ausencia. En el plano estrictamente deportivo, Payne completó una actuación regular en el reciente empate 2 a 2 frente a Irán, donde el equipo oceánico sumó un punto tras los goles de Elijah Just y la capitanía de Chris Wood.
A pocos meses de las elecciones de medio mandato, elServicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) ha comenzado a solicitar información privada de votantes en estados clave. Según una investigación de EL PAÍS, que tuvo acceso a correos electrónicos obtenidos por la organización Democracy Forward, agentes de la unidad de Investigaciones de Seguridad Nacional (HSI) contactaron directamente a funcionarios electorales de Texas y Carolina del Norte para pedir expedientes de al menos nueve electores.
En Texas, la solicitud llegó al condado Webb, fronterizo con México, donde un agente especial pidió documentos de registro y récords de votación de siete personas. Los correos no detallan por qué fueron seleccionados esos votantes específicos.
“No hay nada”, respondió José Luis Castillo, administrador electoral del condado, al medio Axios, que reportó primero el caso. “En mi opinión, podrían utilizar sus recursos para otra cosa más útil”.

En el otro extremo del país, un asesor jurídico del ICE solicitó datos de dos electores del condado Forsyth, uno registrado en 2016 y otro que se empadronó hace tres décadas. Ambos fueron posteriormente eliminados del padrón, aunque las autoridades locales no pudieron explicar las razones ni proporcionar documentos tan antiguos.
El condado Forsyth votó mayoritariamente demócrata tanto en 2020 como en 2024, lo que ha generado suspicacias sobre los criterios de selección.
Una narrativa sin sustento
El presidente Donald Trump ha insistido desde 2016 en la existencia de un fraude electoral masivo, pese a que nunca ha presentado evidencia. Incluso miembros de su propio partido lo han cuestionado.
“La insistencia de Trump de que un fraude electoral es la razón por la que los republicanos pierden elecciones ha sido muy dañina para el partido”, criticó en 2024 Trey Grayson, exsecretario de Estado de Kentucky.
El sitio de verificación Politifact ha documentado que el fraude electoral en Estados Unidos es “estadísticamente raro e insuficiente para cambiar el resultado en las elecciones federales”.
Por su parte, el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional confirmó a EL PAÍS que HSI “trabaja activamente para detectar e investigar el fraude electoral”, aunque no ofreció detalles sobre los casos específicos. La organización Democracy Forward calificó las acciones como “inquietantes” y recordó que el ICE “no tiene ninguna función en la investigación de elecciones“.
Darius Acuff Jr. grew up in a family of basketball players. His dad played college ball at Eastern Kentucky, his mom played in high school and his uncle, Rashad Phillips, was the all-time leading scorer at the University of Detroit Mercy.
“Some people come from a family of doctors and you end up becoming a doctor … Darius came from an entire family of basketball players and it’s been a part of him since he was born,” Phillips told NBA.com.
Phillips and Acuff Sr. started training Acuff when he was seven years old. He loved basketball, like everyone else in his family, and would watch his older cousins play, wanting to be on the court with them.
“I’ve had a ball in my hands for as long as I can remember,” Acuff told NBA.com. “It’s always been a family thing. We’re all hoopers and love the game.”
It was clear to both Phillips and Acuff’s dad that he was a different kind of player at around age 10 with his work ethic and love for the game.
“I couldn’t get him out of the gym,” Phillips said. “I told his dad that these types of kids only come around once every 20 years and I just knew. They run different, they talk different and their energy is just different than other kids and that was Darius.”
Acuff quickly rose in the rankings once he hit high school. In one of the most talented high school classes in the last 10 years, Acuff was a top five player in the country and could score at will. In fact, only four players ranked ahead of him in high school: AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer and Nate Ament.
All four players are expected to be lottery picks in the 2026 NBA Draft. In his senior season at IMG Academy, Acuff had a two-game stretch where he posted 71 points and committed only two turnovers.
“The biggest thing for me is shot selection and getting to my spots, that was my focus,” Acuff said at the Nike Hoop Summit his senior year.
Acuff had over 20 high-major offers and committed to Arkansas the summer before his senior season. He chose coach John Calipari’s program over Kansas, Michigan and Kentucky. He was the No. 1 point guard in high school and was coming in with fellow five-star guard Meleek Thomas.
“Coming in, coach Cal just told me, ‘be you. Don’t change up and don’t try to be something you’re not,’” Acuff said. “I feel like coach Cal is the best coach to build your confidence as a guard. His track record and history speaks for itself, and he never really talked about all the great guards that came before me, he talked about my game and what I could bring to the team.”
Many speculated about how Acuff and Thomas would work in the backcourt alongside junior guard DJ Wagner. Coming in, Acuff was a ball-dominant lead guard who commanded a lot of offensive touches. Thomas was a high-volume shooter who also had the ball in his hands the majority of the time in the Overtime Elite league. It could have been a recipe for disaster, but the opposite occurred.
The three guards found harmony and acceptance in the offense as Acuff manipulated defenders and created for others. The most shocking part of Acuff’s development during his one year at Arkansas was his passing and playmaking, averaging 6.4 assists per game.
“A lot of people know Darius as a scorer, but the most underrated part of his game is his passing, for real,” Thomas said. “The helpside D had to respect his drive first and when that happened, he was always able to find an open teammate. We all started to trust him early on and everything just clicked for us as a group once conference play started.”
Historically, the SEC has been one of the toughest conferences in college hoops. This season was no different. It was anyone’s game each night and the Razorbacks hit a stretch in February in which they played Auburn at home and two days later faced a very fast Alabama team on the road. Acuff had 31 points in the home win over Auburn and met his match in Labaron Philon and Alabama on the road. The game went into double overtime and Acuff put on a scoring clinic, netting a season-high 49 points (16-for-27 from the field, 11-for-12 from the free throw line) in the 117-115 loss and was one point shy of a 50-point game.
Four months later, that loss during the season still bothers him.
“People don’t realize that I missed that free throw with five minutes left in the game, it’s not like I meant to miss that shot,” Acuff said. “The points don’t matter to me. We still lost that game. He [pointing to Thomas] fouled out so if he wouldn’t have fouled out we would’ve won that game. He had 24 points.”
Acuff consistently received praise from opposing coaches as he quickly became the best lead guard and floor general in college.
“I’ve never seen a point guard better than he is,” Texas head coach Sean Miller said after their loss to Arkansas in March. “In my time coaching 34 years, I’ve never seen a point guard better. He leads our league in scoring and assists and the best thing Arkansas does is they don’t turn the ball over. They don’t commit a lot of turnovers because he has the ball in his hands 80 percent of the time … He’s a generational player.”
Acuff led Arkansas to an SEC championship title, netting 91 points and 23 assists in three games. He was the SEC Player of the Year and averaged 23.5 points and 6.4 assists per game while shooting 44% on 3-pointers on 5.8 3-point attempts per game.
In the NCAA tournament, Acuff took over down the stretch in a tough matchup against High Point, finishing with 36 points and six assists. Arkansas ran out of gas in the Sweet 16 against Arizona but Acuff averaged just under 30 points and 5.5 assists on the biggest stage in college basketball with every NBA scout and executive watching.
“He’s an ultra competitor and would make baskets because he wasn’t afraid to miss late in games,” Calipari said of Acuff. “He has otherworldly confidence and is one of the best scorers in the country. He plays off his teammates and they help each other.”
Calipari also went on to say that NBA teams would “regret passing on Darius (Acuff) in the same way they passed on Shai (Gilgeous-Alexander) and Tyrese (Maxey)” in the draft. Gilgeous-Alexander, the reigning two-time Kia MVP, was the No. 11 pick in 2018 while Maxey, an All-NBA Third Team guard this season, went No. 21 in 2020.
There’s been a resurgence of appreciation for smaller lead guards after the 6-foot-2 Jalen Brunson led the New York Knicks to an NBA title this year. Brunson is an outlier in the league’s wave of undersized guards, and many believe he is one-of-one in serving as the driving force behind New York’s first NBA title in 53 years.
It’s reckless to compare Acuff, a player who hasn’t logged a single NBA minute, to Brunson. But there are some similarities between their games. Acuff can seamlessly create a shot from nothing and he finishes through contact well. He is a pure bucket-getter and there could be a team in this year’s draft hoping to get their version of Brunson in Acuff.
Acuff entered the NBA Draft Combine relaxed and confident. He measured well at 6-foot-2 without shoes and a 6-foot-6.5 wingspan. The biggest area of concern in Acuff’s game is his defense. At times during the season, he took possessions off to conserve energy for what he was being asked to do on offense, but his foot speed and numbers in agility testing showed he shouldn’t have any problems making those adjustments at the NBA level.
“He’s always been brought up to win his matchup,” Phillips said. “At Arkansas, his job was to win his matchup against the opposing team’s point guard and if you go back and look at it, he won all his matchups. When you are the engine of the team, you have to use your energy wisely and he had to use so much energy to keep the machine running on offense, sometimes he took some possessions off defensively. I don’t doubt he’ll have any issues adjusting defensively in the league. His work ethic and commitment to winning speaks for itself.”
Acuff has traveled and worked out for the Utah Jazz, Chicago Bulls, Brooklyn Nets and Sacramento Kings, while the Dallas Mavericks and Milwaukee Bucks came to see him work out. His draft range is anywhere from five to 10, with many believing he’s not falling back to pick No. 7 by the Kings. General Manager Scott Perry has a longstanding relationship with the Acuff family as he coached Acuff’s dad at Eastern Kentucky in the late 1990s.
“Whatever team drafts me is getting a dog on the court,” Acuff said. “I’m just going to keep doing what I’ve always been doing and work hard and prove people wrong.”
They are all winners on the biggest stage, carving out a legacy and are immortalized in the process.
They are the NBA Finals MVPs, players who weren’t spooked by the challenge, didn’t blink at the bright lights. Players who were crowned twice — with the championship trophy and also the highest individual honor of the series.
Given that the award has gone to a player on the championship team with one exception — Jerry West in 1969 — a case can be made that the Finals MVP holds as much, if not more, prestige as the regular-season MVP.
In the history of the Finals, the MVP has mainly gone to players who populated the 50th and 75th anniversary teams and are members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. However, there are a sprinkling of unsung players who captured the award as well, including Cedric Maxwell of the Boston Celtics in 1981 and Andre Iguodala of the Golden State Warriors in 2015.
Usually, the criteria used by voters to weigh the worthy candidates are dominated by these two factors:
• Dominance: How effective was the player in his particular series? How many of his signature moments — plays, shots, games, etc. — impacted the outcome and gave him a highlight that’ll be replayed forever? And what about the quality of the opponent he needed to slay?
• Value to his team: This is important. Did he carry the load, or a hefty share of it, almost by himself through long stretches and for multiple games? And how efficient was he doing so?

2026: Jalen Brunson, New York Knicks

His case: Brunson wasn’t sharp for the entire series, not until the closeout game against the Spurs. But he was at his sharpest when it mattered. Brunson delivered a crucial fourth-quarter basket in all four Knicks victories, plus his Game 5 was one of the best scoring closeouts ever.
In that game, he scored 45 points, 15 in the fourth quarter and 13 in a row, while his teammates either struggled or dealt with foul trouble. Also, the Spurs’ defense was designed mainly to stop him, even assigning 7-foot-4 center Victor Wembanyama to the chore. Brunson broke the code anyway, impressive for a player who’s just over 6-1.
2025: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Oklahoma City Thunder

His case: He ran the table on all the major awards that season, copping the MVPs in the regular season and conference final. In the championship round, it was more of the same from Gilgeous-Alexander, who excelled in the mid-range and had the Pacers on high alert for seven games.
His 38 points in Game 1 were the third-most by a player in his Finals debut, after Allen Iverson and George Mikan. He did so in a losing cause, however, yet followed up with 34 points to pass Iverson for most points in a player’s first two Finals games.
2024: Jaylen Brown, Boston Celtics

His case: Brown only led his team in scoring once (22 in the opener) in this series, and teammate Jayson Tatum had higher averages almost across the board. But Brown’s play at both ends against Dallas was the difference, especially while defending Luka Dončić.
Brown held Dončić (just 24.4% shooting from deep) in check for the most part. Also, Brown was a more efficient shooter than Tatum (38.8%), who struggled at times.
2023: Nikola Jokić, Denver Nuggets

His case: Just as he had during his epic regular season, Jokić carried the Nuggets with his multifaceted skills, enabling him to leave his fingerprints everywhere. He opened the series with a triple-double and excelled from there in the five-game series against Miami.
Also consider his efficiency — 58.3% from the floor, 42.1% from the 3-point line — along with his precise passing and it was no surprise Jokić elevated his play above all others. He went against Bam Adebayo, then and now among the league’s better defenders.
2022: Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors

His case: In his previous three championship wins, Curry never won Finals MVP. Even Andre Iguodala had more. In those cases, Curry didn’t play his absolute best basketball, and twice he had the misfortune — or rather fortune — to have Kevin Durant as a teammate; KD was better in those Finals and won a pair of MVPs.
But on his fourth try, Curry was king. Even more, the Warriors needed his best. Durant left a few years earlier for Brooklyn. Also, Klay Thompson struggled since returning from injury; he was still solid in stretches yet no longer on the same splash level as Curry.
Curry dropped 43 points to even the series with Boston at 2-2, then had 34 in the elimination game.
2021: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks

His case: After the Bucks lost twice to the Phoenix Suns to open the series — losing Game 2 despite 42 points from Antetokounmpo — he went on a rampage. It was a conquering stretch and his 50-piece in the closeout performance was the chef’s kiss.
Antetokounmpo was a terror at both ends, and two highlight plays remain a thriller to this day.
First was his amazing defensive stop in Game 4. With just over one minute remaining and the Bucks ahead by just two points, Antetokounmpo was guarding outside the paint, then swiftly retreated to block an alley-oop dunk attempt by Deandre Ayton that would’ve tied the game. Then, in Game 5, his dunk off a lob from Jrue Holiday gave Milwaukee a 3-2 lead. Antetokounmpo did this while playing on a knee that was hyperextended in the conference finals.
2020: LeBron James, Los Angeles Lakers

His case: This wasn’t his Mona Lisa in the championship round. His 2016 run was more stirring because he was up against the record-setting Warriors and had to rally the Cavs from a 3-1 deficit. Also, in 2017, LeBron became the first player to average a triple-double in the Finals, but it was a losing cause. Still, his performance in the Disney Bubble was impressive. And it would rank higher on this Ladder if not for Anthony Davis’ presence, who provided massive help to LeBron against Miami.
Anyway, LeBron captured his fourth Finals MVP (with three different franchises) in smashing fashion once again. He led the Lakers in scoring, rebounding and assists and shot 59.1% during this series. And his triple-double in the closeout Game 6 sealed it.
2019: Kawhi Leonard, Toronto Raptors

His case: Acquired by the Raptors in the summer of 2018, landing Leonard was a dice roll by Toronto because of his injury history and pending free agency. Still, it was well worth the gamble because Kawhi once again leveled up in the Finals (he had won Finals MVP in 2014 with the Spurs).
What a difference maker. Leonard was up against the Warriors, and while Golden State played the series virtually without Kevin Durant, the Raptors were at an experience disadvantage. Kawhi brought that winning pedigree from San Antonio and his all-around play brought Toronto its first title.
2018: Kevin Durant, Golden State Warriors
Kevin Durant drops a triple-double in Game 4 and wins the 2018 Finals MVP as the Warriors win the title.
His case: The Warriors swept the Cavs, making Durant’s second Finals MVP without much drama. But that’s partly because he was dominant in the four games and especially when it mattered. In a bit of deja vu, he had a Game 3 dagger over James with 50 seconds left to give the Warriors a 106-100 lead in nearly the same spot as he did a year prior. His 43 points in that game were needed as Curry and Klay Thompson were chilly, with Curry missing 13 of his first 14 shots.
His case: That Durant was the unanimous winner of the award while playing next to Curry says all you need to know. Not only that, but he was the best player on a floor shared with LeBron. This was the first of his two Finals MVPs with the Warriors.
His go-ahead Game 3 dagger from deep over LeBron with 45 seconds left was the signature moment. He led the team in scoring every game of this series and dropped at least 30 points in each of them. The closeout was a scoring duel with LeBron; KD had 39 points to LeBron’s 41 and the Warriors won by nine.

Argentina, la campeona del mundo, comienza este martes la defensa del título contra Argelia, con dudas sobre el estado físico del plantel, que puede condicionar su esquema táctico, pero la certeza de competir con un bloque que mantiene el espíritu de su último Mundial. El choque entre suramericanos y africanos se vio empañado horas antes de que empiece a rodar el balón en el Arrowhead Stadium de Kansas City por una violenta pelea que protagonizaron los hinchas de ambas selecciones.
El clima de la Copa del Mundo se tomó las principales calles de los Estados Unidos, que albergan el torneo junto con México y Canadá. Hinchas de Argentina se encontraron este martes en el corazón de Nueva York, el Times Square, pero lo que tenía que ser una fiesta terminó en caos.

Pelea entre hinchas
El Times Square de Nueva York fue epicentro de una violenta pelea entre hinchas de la selección de Argentina y de Argelia a escasas horas del duelo de los dos equipos en el grupo J de la Copa del Mundo.
A través de videos compartidos en las redes sociales se observó la pelea en uno de los lugares más concurridos de Estados Unidos. Los disturbios obligaron a que personas que transitaban por allí intervinieran para controlar la situación.

Ambas hinchadas se encontraron en el lugar y entonaron cánticos en apoyo a su selección, pero la situación fue tomando temperatura hasta el punto de que todo explotó por los aires. De los gritos se pasó a la agresión. Personas vestidas con las camisetas de Argentina y Argelia empezaron a lanzarse patadas y puños en un clima de extrema tensión. También volaron botellas y latas de un lado hacia otro.
Los argelinos lanzaron patadas sin importar a quién le cayeran. Los argentinos respondieron con puños, golpes con un palo y varios empujones. Algunos niños que estaban en el lugar salieron despavoridos corriendo, mientras que personas neutrales trataban de controlar a la multitud furiosa.

El director técnico italiano Fabio Cannavaro liderará a la Selección de Uzbekistán este miércoles 17 de junio en su enfrentamiento contra la Selección de Colombia, en el marco de la fase de grupos de la Copa del Mundo. La trayectoria de un director técnico del fútbol internacional que sueña en grande
Cannavaro construyó su reputación global como defensor central, alcanzando el éxito en el Mundial de Alemania 2006, donde capitaneó a la selección de Italia hacia el título y recibió el Balón de Oro. En su transición al banquillo, el técnico registra un promedio de 0.86 años como entrenador y cuenta con un recorrido destacado en el fútbol asiático, principalmente en China.
Durante su etapa en dicho balompié, fue galardonado como Entrenador del Año en la temporada de la Superliga de China. Su palmarés en el país asiático incluye el campeonato de la China League One, logrando el ascenso a la máxima categoría, el título de la Superliga y la Supercopa de China. Asimismo, acumula experiencia en torneos continentales, registrando cuatro participaciones en la AFC Champions League y una presencia en la Uefa Champions League.

El esquema de Uzbekistán y la estrategia ante el conjunto colombiano
Para el compromiso de este miércoles, el entrenador mantendrá su formación preferida basada en el esquema 4-2-3-1, priorizando la solidez en las líneas y el rigor defensivo. De cara al partido ante Colombia, Cannavaro declaró públicamente que la prioridad de su plantel es sostener el orden táctico en la cancha. El director técnico restó presión a sus futbolistas al afirmar de manera objetiva que el equipo no carga con obligaciones externas en este torneo y que, dada la complejidad del rival, la obtención de un punto representaría un logro de gran valor para el debut del conjunto uzbeko en la competencia.
