  • Dan Quinn on ‘rare’ LB Sonny Styles: ‘He has such unique traits to him’

The Washington Commanders spent the offseason revamping Dan Quinn’s defense after a rough second campaign in DC. The cherry on top of that restoration sundae came on draft night when they swiped do-it-all linebacker Sonny Styles with the No. 7 overall pick.

In an interview with the Rich Eisen Show, Quinn touted Styles’ versatility and how that can affect the entire defensive unit.

“I think it’s rare. … This type of linebacker; the athletic traits, the speed, the size, the length — it’s not an every-year player,” Quinn said. “I’m a developmental coach — I can’t wait to coach him. He’s hungry for it; he wants to improve. Seeing his first couple years at DB and then shifting down to linebacker at the start of the 2024 season, I just felt like this guy’s gonna take off. Reps at the position, and like just seeing it more and more, I cannot wait to get rolling with him.”

Styles’ athletic profile is one scouts drool over, and his performance at the NFL Scouting Combine confirmed the linebacker as a top-10 pick. In Indianapolis, Styles posted absurd numbers that included the highest vertical jump among linebackers (43 1/2 inches), the longest broad jump (11-foot-2), and a 4.46-second 40-yard dash time that tied for the fastest among linebackers and included a 1.56-second 10-yard split, also tied for the top split in his position group.

The Combine performance confirmed his freakish athletic profile, and added to a resume that included a stellar final two seasons at Ohio State in which he piled up 182 tackles (17 for loss), seven sacks, two forced fumbles, one interception and eight pass breakups. At 6-foot-5 and 244 pounds, Styles had testing results that turned him into a tantalizing prospect who drew comparisons to 49ers All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner, an elite defender capable of making game-changing plays in run defense and pass coverage.

If Styles comes anywhere close to Warner’s ability and intelligence in the middle of the defense, it would cement Quinn’s giddiness.

The coach said he’ll “consider” having Styles wear the Green Dot in practice as a rookie, an indication that Washington is already toying with putting a ton on the rookie’s plate. “He is definitely capable of that.”

“He has such unique traits to him,” Quinn said. “And so, we will play in a lot of zone where we will have vision to the QB and you can imagine this type of speed, this type of length, to be able to close to the ball. Although he hasn’t blitzed a ton at Ohio State — (Arvell) Reese was there, as well — the fact that we’re going to send this guy as a blitzer. So, I think it’s that type of versatility, where we will align him, how we can do that. He’s got the football acumen because of his time at safety, the coverage part of his game is intact and so to see him unleashed in some new ways, that’s going to be something that I very much look forward to being a part of.”

As NFL defenses move closer to positionless football in the back seven, players with Styles’ versatility and skill become extremely valuable.

  • Bucs’ Yaya Diaby on first meeting with Rueben Bain: He’s got that ‘mad, mad, mad look’

When Rueben Bain Jr. fell to the No. 15 overall pick, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rushed in the pick to add the powerful pass rusher.

It’s not just the front office or coaching staff that is giddy to add the self-described Mike Tyson-style edge. His new teammates were thrilled with his addition to the defense.

In an interview with Kay Adams on “Up & Adams” on FanDeul TV this week, Bucs pass rusher YaYa Diaby said he was surprised Bain was still on the board with the club picked, because in his mind, the Miami product was the top edge of the draft.

“Just by the look in his eyes — he’s hungry,” Diaby said of his first meeting with the rookie. “And he got that mad, mad, mad look like he’s ready to get after it. As you can see, from the walk that he had, he picked up the hat and just went right to the stage. So, you could tell how hungry he is, how ready he is. Honestly, the whole pass rush,, the whole edge class, he was the best in my eyes. I’m just so happy to have him part of this team.”

Diaby said he could tell Bain was “pissed” with his draft fall, but believes he fell into an ideal situation for both the team and player.

Tampa desperately needed aid opposite Diaby, who led the Bucs with 7.0 sacks last season. No other player hit the 5-sack mark. Bain’s presence immediately boosts a pass rush that had to bring blitzers to do any damage a year ago.

“He will be a difference maker for us,” Diaby said.

The additions of Bain and veteran Al-Quadin Muhammad on a one-year deal have the potential to completely revamp the pass rush. Todd Bowles needs the rookie to be an impact player in Year 1 if the defense is to turn things around after last year’s struggles.

Diaby, the Bucs leading sack artist two of the past three seasons, enters the final year of his contract. The former third-round pick is an interesting extension candidate. He’s clearly one of the club’s best pass rushers, a position of need throughout the league, but he has never hit the double-digit sack figure in a season. If it were up to Diaby, he’d sign long-term in Tampa.

“I’m excited, I can’t even lie. This is where I want to be, especially the team that drafted you,” he told Adams. “It’s nothing but good; I love the fans, I love the coaches, I love my teammates, first and foremost. I love going to battle with them every single day.”

  • 4 takeaways: 76ers keep Celtics under wraps yet again, force Game 7 in Boston

The 76ers defeat the Celtics, 106-93, to force a Game 7 on Saturday to see who will take on the Knicks.

    • Download the NBA App

No two franchises have played each other more times in NBA history than the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers. So appropriately, we’re getting a Game 7 in their 23rd playoff series.

The Sixers made it happen with a comfortable, 106-93 victory in Game 6 on Thursday, the second straight game in which they shot down the Celtics’ high-powered offense. Philly outscored Boston, 62-40, over the middle two quarters and had Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla taking his starters out of the game with more than 10 minutes left in the fourth.

All five of the Sixers’ starters scored at least 14 points, and Tyrese Maxey led the way with 30 on 11-for-22 shooting. Joel Embiid (19 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists) wasn’t efficient, but created plenty of open shots for his teammates.

In addition to having lost their 3-1 series lead, the Celtics may have a concern with the health of Jayson Tatum, who seemed to have an issue with his lower left leg. (It was his right Achilles that he tore less than a year ago.)

“My leg just was a little stiff,” Tatum said, “when I came out in the third quarter.”

Here are some notes, numbers and film as the series heads back to Boston for Game 7 on Saturday (7:30 ET, NBC/Peacock):

    1. Maxey takes what the Celtics give him

Maxey has become a big problem for the Celtics’ defense. He averaged 27 points through the first three games of the series, but on a true shooting percentage of just 48.8%. Over the last three games, he’s averaged 25.7 on 65.4%. And with the win on Thursday, the Sixers are 15-3 when Maxey has scored at least 30 points on a true shooting percentage of 60 or better.

His in-between game wasn’t particularly sharp in Game 6; he shot just 3-for-11 on 2-pointers outside the restricted area. But he was 5-for-6 at the basket, 3-for-5 from 3-point range and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.

The Celtics have been “icing” more pick-and-rolls since Game 3, trying to force the ball-handler away from the screener. And that strategy was working prior to Thursday, with the Sixers scoring just 0.83 points per chance when an iced screen led directly to a shot, turnover or trip to the line.

But in Game 6, the Sixers scored 17 points on eight chances (2.13 per).

Midway through the second quarter, Derrick White jumped out to keep Maxey from using an Andre Drummond screen toward the middle of the floor. So Maxey went the other way, snaked his way back to the middle, kept White on his hip, and dropped in a short runner:

Tyrese Maxey runner in the paint

Late in the second, Payton Pritchard tried to keep Maxey from using an Embiid screen toward the middle of the floor. So Embiid flipped the screen and Maxey drained a pull-up 3, with Nikola Vučević in drop coverage:

    Tyrese Maxey pull-up 3-pointer

After the Celtics took their starters out, they started blitzing Maxey, maybe a preview of what’s to come in Game 7. That forced him to get rid of the ball, but it just created 4-on-3 advantages or mismatches for the Sixers, which resulted in some wide-open looks from the corners.

    2. The Celtics’ offense has been shut down

The 2025-26 Celtics are responsible for four of the 14 games of the last 30 years where a team scored more than 150 points per 100 possessions. And over these last two games, they’ve scored just 97.9 per 100.

In fact, Games 5 and 6 of this series are just the second time this season that the Celtics have scored fewer than 105 points per 100 possessions in consecutive games. The other time was in January, when they lost to the Spurs in the second game of a back-to-back and then lost in Indiana without Jaylen Brown (or Tatum).

Some of it is just some poor shooting from the outside. Their three losses in this series are just the 19th, 20th and 21st times that the Celtics have shot below 30% from 3-point range this season. Sam Hauser, a career 41% shooter from deep, had two wiiiiide-open looks late in the third quarter on Thursday, and he missed them both.

The Sixers have also been terrific defensively. Paul George was, once again, stout when guarding the Celtics’ stars. Multiple Sixers made timely weak-side rotations to block shots at the rim. And even Maxey held his own on that end of the floor.

The Celtics scored just four points on their first 10 possessions, and Maxey played a big role in a couple of the Sixers’ stops. On the Celtics’ first possession of the game, he chased Hauser around two screens and made a great trail contest on his 3-point attempt.

A few minutes later, Maxey got switched onto Brown and successfully defended him in the post:

Tyrese Maxey post defense vs. Jaylen Brown

Embiid got beat off the dribble multiple times in Game 6 and will need to be better in Game 7 on Saturday. But as a group, the Sixers are doing some terrific work against what was the league’s second-ranked offense in the regular season.

    3. Sixers finally stop ‘Spain’

The Celtics had some success with their “Spain” or “stack” pick-and-roll action, where a standard, high pick-and-roll is followed by a back-screen on the initial screener’s defender. Their first points of the night came when Hauser blew by Embiid after the Spain action forced a switch.

Boston’s second bucket of the night was another Spain pick-and-roll where Embiid got screened by White and VJ Edgecombe (White’s defender) was late to pick up Tatum’s drive to the bucket.

Early in the third quarter, Tatum had an even clearer path to the rim when Hauser screened Embiid and Maxey (worried about sticking to Hauser) failed to switch onto the drive:

    Jayson Tatum dunk

But on the very next possession, the Sixers were ready. Embiid sunk back in the paint to avoid getting hit with the back-scree and George navigated the ball-screen expertly to get back in front of Tatum. Maxey initially stayed with Hauser, but then came from Tatum’s blind side and poked the ball away:

Tyrese Maxey strips the ball from Jayson Tatum

Spain can be a difficult action to stop, because it involves communication and coordination between three defenders instead of just two. The Sixers also ran it on Thursday and we can expect to see more of it in Game 7.

    4. The Celtics’ 3s aren’t going down … or getting up

In addition to connecting on just 29% of their 3-pointers in Games 5 and 6, the Celtics have also been shooting fewer 3s. After taking an amazing 58% of their shots from beyond the arc over Games 2-4, they’ve taken just 46% of their shots from deep over the last two. That’s a noteworthy drop-off, and the rate on Thursday climbed after they took their starters out early in the fourth quarter.

That 46% is still a higher rate than almost every other team in those playoffs. And more important, of course, is the success rate.

In the regular season, the Celtics were 38-5 (.884) when they shot the league average (36.0%) or better from 3-point range and 18-21 (.462) when they didn’t. That was the league’s second-biggest differential, and the largest among the 16 playoff teams.

That differential was more about how good they were when they shot well, and that 18-21 mark was still the ninth-best record when shooting worse than average. But this has been a make-or-miss series on their end of the floor, and Boston will need to make more in Game 7 on Saturday.

  • 4 takeaways: Knicks close out Hawks in historic fashion during Game 6

The Knicks defeat the Hawks, 140-89, to close out the series, 4-2, and advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals.

    • Download the NBA App

The New York Knicks are headed back to the Eastern Conference Semifinals for a fourth consecutive season. But the way they did proved unlike any previous trip — not only in Knicks history, but also NBA history.

Paced by the ultra-efficient wing combo of OG Anunoby (29 points, 11-for-14 FGs) and Mikal Bridges (24 points, 10-12 FGs), and a triple-double from Karl-Anthony Towns (12 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists), the Knicks earned a 140-89 Game 6 victory to advance, ending Atlanta’s season.

After suffering back-to-back one-point losses in Games 2 and 3 to go down 2-1 in the series, the Knicks never lost again. They posted one dominant win after another — a 16-point victory in Game 4 in Atlanta, a 29-point triumph in Game 5 in New York, and an emphatic 51-point closeout victory in Game 6 on the road.

That’s a plus-96 over the final three games of the series for the Knicks, making a loud statement as the first Eastern Conference team to punch its ticket to the conference semifinals.

Here are four takeaways from Thursday night:

    1. Knicks deliver a first-half knockout

The Knicks set an NBA playoff record in Game 6, taking a 47-point halftime lead (83-36) against the Hawks, powered by a 43-6 run.

Four minutes into Game 6, the Hawks held an 11-9 lead as the crowd settled in for a win-or-go-home contest for the home team.

What followed over the next 20 minutes of game action left everyone in the building — and everyone watching at home — flabbergasted.

Beginning with an Anunoby 3-pointer with 7:50 remaining in the opening quarter, the Knicks scored 14 straight points to take a 12-point lead. But the floodgates had just opened. New York closed the opening quarter on a 31-4 run to take a 40-15 lead, with Anunoby leading the way (14 points, 6-7 FGs).

The Knicks were playing with the energy, intensity and relentlessness usually reserved for a team facing elimination. They swarmed on defense, forcing eight Hawks turnovers, and pushed the ball in transition for easy baskets time and again.

And they never let up. New York followed up its first-quarter haymaker with another wallop in the second quarter, outscoring the Hawks 43-21. They led by as many as 50 points in the first half and went into the locker room up 83-36.

“Our guys, their connectedness right now is off the charts,” said Knicks coach Mike Brown. “And when you lock into the details and you’re connected like that with a group that is as talented and versatile as that group, you have a chance to do that.”

The Knicks’ 74-25 run to close the half turned a two-point deficit into a 47-point halftime lead — the largest in NBA playoff history, eclipsing the previous record of 41 points.

“It speaks volumes about our team. When we’re locked in and playing close to our best, we’re really, really good,” Towns said. “So, it’s about finding that team, that version of us, consistently, especially in a seven-game series. Just tapping into that version of us more often than not.”

Even with the game well in hand, the Knicks continued to build on their advantage in the second half, leading by as many as 61 points — the largest lead in a playoff game during the play-by-play era (since 1997-98). Both teams pulled their starters in the final frame as New York cruised.

    2. Bridges finding his way

After scoring in double figures in each of the first two games, Mikal Bridges posted a total of 15 points on 6-for-13 shooting in Games 3-5 combined.

But Thursday was a different story for Bridges, who thrived during the Knicks’ onslaught. He finished with 24 points on 10-for-12 shooting, while scoring at all three levels – finishing at the hoop in transition, hitting stepback jumpers in the midrange and a pair of 3-pointers.

“It’s great — he just did what he’s capable of doing,” Brown said. “Now, is he going to go 10-for-12 every night? No. But he was aggressive. He took great shots. And I wouldn’t let it go unnoticed that his defense was phenomenal. … It was a big night on both ends of the floor from Mikal.”

    3. Knicks await winner of Celtics-Sixers Game 7

While the Knicks were able to close out their first-round series on the road, the No. 2 seed Celtics were unable to do the same in Philadelphia as the 76ers earned a 106-93 win to force a Game 7 (Sat., 7:30 ET on NBC/Peacock).

The Knicks await the winner, with Game 1 of the conference semifinals set for Monday, May 4.

But don’t worry about the Knicks feeling complacent:

“It’s something that we’re going to have to flush, turn the page, and get ready,” Brunson said. “Happy with the way we performed, but it’s time to turn the page and refocus up.”

A Celtics win would set up a rematch with the Knicks. Last year’s series saw the Knicks win in six games after the Celtics lost Jayson Tatum to an Achilles tear in Game 4.

New York won this year’s regular-season series with Boston 3-1, including a 112-106 win on April 9 that featured the Celtics back at full strength following Tatum’s return to the court in March. It was Tatum’s first game back at Madison Square Garden, the very place where he suffered the devastating injury 11 months prior.

The Knicks split their season series with the Sixers, with New York winning the two most recent matchups, including a 49-point win on Feb. 11 in Philadelphia. However, none of the regular-season meetings between the Knicks and Sixers featured Joel Embiid, who has averaged 26 points in his three games in the opening round.

    4. A morose ending to Hawks’ turnaround season

Sitting as low as 10th in the East as the calendar flipped to 2026, the Hawks reshaped their roster with a number of trades prior to the February trade deadline.

Former face of the franchise Trae Young was traded to Washington for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert. Offseason addition Kristaps Porziņģis was traded to Golden State for Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield. Luke Kennard was traded to Los Angeles for Gabe Vincent. Jock Landale was acquired from Utah in a three-team deal with Chicago.

With new pieces surrounding All-Star forward Jalen Johnson and Kia Most Improved Player Nickeil Alexander-Walker, the Hawks went 20-6 from the All-Star break to the close of the regular season. That was the best mark in the East and the third-best record in the NBA down the stretch.

The Hawks had risen to the No. 6 seed in the East and carried that momentum into the playoffs, taking a 2-1 series lead on the No. 3 seed Knicks before New York was able to turn the tide back in their favor.

Despite the lopsided loss to end their season, the 2025-26 campaign is one for the Hawks to build on as they look toward their future.

“Well, for one, the way we lost was, I think, at no point in time at all this season were we that bad. But we were tonight, and it’s unfortunate,” said Alexander-Walker. “But the good thing about it is, it doesn’t end here. This is something to build on. This is something to grow and learn from.

“For me, I’m glad this is part of my story. It’s something for me that I can embrace, I can hold my head high as a man and say I lost, and even though it was a beating, I’m excited for what this means to send me into the summer.”
