  • Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur believes Jacoby Brissett, Gardner Minshew are both ‘good fits in this system’

Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur believes Jacoby Brissett, Gardner Minshew are both ‘good fits in this system’

One of the advantages LaFleur sold to reporters was Brissett’s experience, a positive quality Minshew can also claim thanks to his seven years spent between Jacksonville, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Las Vegas and Kansas City. Minshew also knows LaFleur from their time spent together at the Senior Bowl back in 2019, when Minshew was entering the NFL from Washington State.

As LaFleur sees it, these advantages should help the coach and his quarterbacks hit the ground running in 2026.

“You’re not teaching a guy how to play football,” LaFleur said of Brissett. “Jacoby knows how to play football. Now we are just teaching him our system.”

Many have likely wondered why Arizona would move on from a former franchise quarterback in Murray just as the club was transitioning to a new coaching staff. In short, the Cardinals wanted a fresh start, so much that they willingly accepted a $46.5 million dead cap hit in 2026 just to part with Murray.

“We had discussions (about keeping Murray) and we’ll keep it at that,” LaFleur said. “You name it, we were talking about it. The quarterback position is the most important position in all of sports. We know that. There were lengthy conversations in so many different aspects of it and there will continue to be until we know we have the most perfect room possible.”

Brissett and Minshew exist as ideal bridge quarterbacks, although it seems as if LaFleur is content with entering 2026 with Brissett as his top choice. But that shouldn’t preclude the Cardinals from exploring another addition or two in the next month, even if 2026 quarterback draft class doesn’t include much upper-tier talent.

“Every room, if we can improve it, we’re going to try and improve it,” LaFleur said. “The quarterback room all the way down to the kicking room.”

As a newly installed coach, LaFleur has the benefit of time on his side. Arizona isn’t likely to pull the plug on his regime after one year unless it’s a complete disaster, meaning he and general manager Monti Ossenfort don’t need to rush to find a solution under center.

They’ll hope their plan for 2026 produces well enough to keep fans content until a better option surfaces.

  • The Hawks have taken flight in 2025-26 behind the play of offseason addition Nickeil Alexander-Walker.

Atlanta Hawks coach Quin Snyder envisioned a role for Nickeil Alexander-Walker that Alexander-Walker hadn’t considered.

“He saw a ceiling higher for myself than I did,” Alexander-Walker told NBA.com in a phone interview. “And that was really cool for me because I felt like in my career I’ve never had that before.”

What did Snyder see? A player who could average 20 points, contribute more as a playmaker and still provide strong defense.

What has Alexander-Walker done? After joining the Hawks in free agency last summer, Alexander-Walker is having the best season of his career. He has helped the Hawks to a 42-33 record, makes a compelling case for 2025-26 Kia Most Improved Player and is one of the most impactful free agents from the summer of 2025.

Alexander-Walker, who is a cousin of Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, has doubled his scoring from 9.4 points per game with the Minnesota Timberwolves last season to 20.4 ppg this season in just eight more minutes per game.

With increased offensive responsibility, Alexander-Walker has maintained his shooting stats (45% from the field, 39.1% on 3-pointers), doubled his 3s made per game (from 1.7 to 3.1), boosted his free-throw shooting percentage (90.1%) and doubled his steals (1.3 spg).

“He sees me as a person who can do more than what I was doing,” Alexander-Walker said. “And that’s something that was very important to me: Could they see the potential through what I was only able to show them through my role?”

Drafted No. 17 by the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2019 NBA Draft, Alexander-Walker was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers and Utah Jazz at the 2022 trade deadline and spent a brief time with Snyder in Utah, which is part of the story.

    Growing his game in Minnesota

The Timberwolves acquired Alexander-Walker from Utah at the 2023 trade deadline, but he was the undercard on a three-team deal that sent Mike Conley to Minnesota, D’Angelo Russell to the Los Angeles Lakers and three second-round picks to the Timberwolves.

Listed as a guard at 6-foot-5, Alexander-Walker settled into his role as a 3-and-D wing and blossomed. He was vital to Minnesota’s run to the Western Conference Finals in 2024 and 2025. But on Timberwolves squads that included Anthony Edwards and either Julius Randle or Karl-Anthony Towns, Minnesota didn’t need him to score 20 points often.

There were games for the Timberwolves when his offense was necessary, and he showed he could do it, scoring 23 points on 9-for-15 shooting against the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 4 of the West Finals.

As Alexander-Walker describes it, his role was “corner 3, get to the paint, eyes out, defend.” That’s not a complaint. It’s reality, and Alexander-Walker thrived, making him a priority for several teams in free agency last summer.

Though Snyder and Alexander-Walker spent just two-plus months together with the Jazz in 2021-22, Snyder followed Alexander-Walker’s career. Snyder said he believed that with the right player development program, Alexander-Walker could be that scorer regularly.

“He said these are things we’ll need you to do,” Alexander-Walker said. “And those things weren’t things that I was asked to do my previous years. Just the ability to take contested shots. He was like, ‘Hey, there might come a time throughout the game we might need you to take a contested shot.’ ”

    ‘Decision-maker’ arrives in Atlanta

Nickeil Alexander-Walker drops 41 points on the Magic to keep the Hawks rolling.

    It was a lightbulb moment.

“A contested shot can be deemed a bad shot, but not really because you know a lot of great players, a lot of good players in this league, very rarely are they getting uncontested looks,” Alexander-Walker said.

A slow start – 2-for-15 on 3s in the first two games of 2025-26 – obscured the Hawks’ vision for Alexander-Walker. The message from Snyder didn’t change: Stay aggressive. Keep shooting.

“Because our hearts are in the right place, they often align with how we think and act,” Alexander-Walker said. “And that makes it easier for him and I to work together to find my spots and settle into being a decision-maker.”

In his sixth game, he scored 21 points, starting a stretch of at least 20 points in 15 of his next 22 games, including 38 against the San Antonio Spurs on Nov. 20.

He had a career-high 41 points in a 124-112 victory against the Orlando Magic on March 16. In that game, he was 12-for-21 overall, 9-for-14 on 3-pointers, 8-for-9 on free throws while also logging seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.

That began a month in which the Hawks went 12-2, moving from ninth to sixth place in the East. In 15 games in March, Alexander-Walker averaged a team-best 22.7 ppg and 3.9 apg on shooting splits of 52.8%/46.8%/94.2%. His true shooting percentage (70.3%) is best among all guards who played at least 10 games and more than 20 minutes per game in March.

“The thing that we’ve tried to impress upon him from the outset is that we need his aggressiveness (and) for him to understand that that’s not tied to whether or not the shot goes in,” Snyder said. “If you aren’t finding efficiency in some of those situations, let’s look at them. Let’s work on them.

“He’s got such a tremendous work ethic, it’s logical that he’s going to improve as the season goes on. The game’s slowing down for him a little bit. He’s so aggressive that as he’s found his tempo in more and more of those situations, he’s gotten more efficient.”

‘The most fun I’ve had playing basketball’

Alexander-Walker is complete with gratitude. He doesn’t take his situation or profession for granted, and that emerges in his answers. He takes time to consider the question and deliver a response that conveys what he means.

He said this season is “the most fun I’ve had playing basketball. I get to go on my own journey with all that I’ve learned, and I’ve tried not to think about averaging X-amount of points or doing X-amount of things with more usage. My mindset is ‘just get better.’

“I’ve worked so hard for something like this. Nourish it. Treat it correctly. Honor it. Value it. That’s my focus.”

At the end of the conversation, Alexander-Walker was asked if he had anything else he wanted to share. He named people who have been by his side: his wife, Sara; son, Nate; mom, Nicole; Snyder; personal basketball trainer, Nem; Cali; Jalen; Shandon; Vince; Ashton; James; Kendall; and B. Bailey.

“Everyone named was part of my village from the summer to this year,” he said, “and they’ve been tremendous.”

    And so has Alexander-Walker.

NBA Fantasy: Latest High Score perfect lineup

The Nuggets’ Nikola Jokić notched three triple-doubles in last week’s fantasy action.

It’s fantasy basketball championship week and if you’ve made it this far, congratulations. All your hard work over the season comes down to one matchup, a matchup that may be difficult to navigate given how wild silly season has gotten. Games are either very, very tight or way too loose given that teams are either fighting for actual playoff positioning or are tanking/eliminated from contention. It has created some of the perfect fantasy basketball environments for players down the stretch.

It’s been a fun ride in the first season of Yahoo High Score fantasy basketball, so let’s go over the perfect lineup from Week 22.

Week 22 High Score Perfect Lineup. (Graphic via Dillon Minshall)

    More on the top performers

Scottie Barnes: The Raptors swingman is tracking toward being a top-10 asset in High Score fantasy this season with excellent category coverage. Two stats that are of the most importance in High Score are steals and blocks. If you’re consistently racking up either of those catties then you’ve got a good chance of reaching a ceiling. Barnes has gone 12 straight games with at least one steal, and the last time he didn’t register a steal or block in a game was Feb. 22. Toronto isn’t clear of the play-in in the East yet, so expect Barnes to continue to play big minutes and help out in the championship round.

Luka Dončić: It was a down week for Luka by his standards. He’s also going to start Week 23 with a one-game suspension, so he’ll only have three contests for High Score managers. But even one of Dončić’s worst weeks is still better than most players’ best weeks. He’ll enter this week coming off back-to-back 40+ point games, but he didn’t hit his ceiling like the previous two weeks — 88 points and 91 points.

Nikola Jokić: Joker was restored to his place atop the High Score leaderboard thanks to 85 fantasy points against the Mavericks last week. It was the rare combination of a team tanking but playing competitive basketball, enough to elicit a game with nearly 280 total points. Bad news for Jokić managers is that a two-game week looms — one of those contests is against the Spurs. The other, fortunately, is against the Jazz. But it also puts pressure on managers to find points elsewhere if Joker can’t top out against Utah or San Antonio.

Alperen Sengun: As a player you likely got in the second or even third round of your draft, Sengun is the definition of a league-winner. His 81 fantasy points in Week 22 were second behind the Nuggets’ big and likely played a big factor in deciding your semifinals. With eight games left, Houston is still fighting to stay out of the play-in tournament. That bodes well for Sengun, who has some great matchups to wrap Week 23 — the Bucks, Jazz and Warriors.

Victor Wembanyama: The Big 3 in fantasy in terms of frontcourt contributors feels like Jokić, Sengun and Wemby, who didn’t quite reach a ceiling in Week 22, though he would have if the scoring were there. Wembanyama had 7 blocks against the Grizz, but only scored 19 with 15 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. The Spurs big does have at least five blocks in three of the past four games. He also has a four-game week with some winnable matchups for fantasy.

Jamal Murray: Of course, Murray also made it onto this list after that track meet between the Nuggets and Mavericks. The shooting guard came two points shy of matching his career high of 55 set back in February of last season. It was Murray’s fourth career game of 50+ points as the guard is also pacing toward being a top-25 fantasy asset this season. As Denver fights for playoff positioning, the Nuggets feel like literal fantasy gold down the stretch.

NBA Fantasy: Power Rankings as playoffs wind down

The Rockets’ Alperen Sengun posted a monster double-double and 81 fantasy points in a win over the Pelicans.

The final two weeks of the regular season are here, and contending teams continue to solidify their postseason positioning. As is typically the case at this critical juncture, the cream is rising to the top, which is borne out by this week’s top five once again consisting of a who’s who of the Association’s elite.

The following players averaged the most fantasy points per game last week (one-game minimum):

    #1. Nikola Jokić, Nuggets

    Last Week: 73.4 FP/G Season Rank: 1 (69.0 FP/G)

Jokić put together another one of his signature weeks, recording a trio of triple-doubles and a double-double during Denver’s impressive 4-0 run. The Nuggets scored between 125 and 142 points in three of those victories, and the big man led the charge with averages of 26.0 points, 17.0 rebounds and 14.0 assists per contest while shooting 56.3%, including 43.8% from 3-point range. Jokić’s week included at least 23 points and 15 rebounds in all four contests, as well as between 12 and 19 assists in three of them. The scoring haul wasn’t artificially inflated by a marathon amount of trips to the line, either, as Joker averaged a modest 5.5 free-throw attempts per contest.

    #2. Alperen Sengun, Rockets

    Last Week: 64.8 FP/G Season Rank: 13 (49.0 FP/G)

Sengun was another center who took his game to another level in Week 22, even though the Rockets put together just a 2-2 record during the period. Sengun recorded at least 30 points in three of the four contests, and he managed a double-double in two of those games with a pair of 13-rebound tallies. Overall, the 2021 first-round pick delivered 28.3 points, 10.0 rebounds, 6.8 assists, 2.8 blocks and 1.5 steals across 36.3 minutes per contest, and he shot a blistering 59.7%, including 54.5% from behind the arc, over the entirety of the sample.

    #3. Victor Wembanyama, Spurs

    Last Week: 64.3 FP/G Season Rank: 7 (54.1 FP/G)

Wemby did his part in a week where the big men shined brightest, churning out a trio of double-doubles alongside five- and seven-block tallies during a dominant week for the Spurs. San Antonio swept road games against the Heat, Grizzlies and Bucks, recording double-digit wins in each with a big boost from Wembanyama’s 22.7 points, 15.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 4.3 blocks and 1.7 steals across 28.0 minutes per contest. Making the scoring numbers all the more noteworthy was the fact the big man’s shot was far from at its best – he drained only 44.8% of his attempts, including a paltry 15.4% from distance.

    #4. Luka Dončić, Lakers

    Last Week: 64.1 FP/G Season Rank: 2 (64.2 FP/G)

Luka will start the new week off serving a one-game suspension against the Wizards due to having accrued his 16th technical foul of the season, but Dončić put together a stellar effort during the Lakers’ 3-0 Week 22. The Slovenian star’s offensive production was especially in prime form, as Dončić scored between 32 and 43 points in each of the wins over the Pistons, Pacers and Nets. There weren’t any double-doubles this time around, but his 48.8% shooting from the floor and 91.7% success rate from the line on 8.0 free-throw attempts per contest helped ensure a spot in the top five.

    #5. Jaylen Brown, Celtics

    Last Week: 61.0 FP/G Season Rank: 9 (50.2 FP/G)

Brown played in just one game last week due to an Achilles injury that cost him the last two contests of the scoring period. However, the star wing, who’s been instrumental in the Celtics’ improbable No. 2 seed during a season that Jayson Tatum missed the majority of, put together an outstanding effort during what was a marquee win for Boston over Oklahoma City, a potential Finals preview. Brown posted 31 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and two steals over 39 minutes, going 9-for-17 from the floor and 12-for-14 from the free-throw line. The performance was emblematic of the level Brown has raised his game to all season, while the result corroborated what Boston might be capable of come the postseason with Tatum also looking more like himself with each game.

    This week’s preview:

The following players are top fantasy point producers and play at least two games next week with fewer than two matchups against top-10 defenses:

    Luka Dončić, LAL (64.2 FP/G) – WAS (Dončić suspended), CLE, @OKC, @DAL

    Jaylen Brown, BOS (50.2 FP/G) – @ATL, @MIA, @MIL, TOR

    Donovan Mitchell, CLE (49.4 FP/G) – @UTA, @LAL, @GSW, IND

Alperen Sengun, HOU (49.0 FP/G) – NY, MIL, UTA, @GSW

    Paolo Banchero, ORL (45.0 FP/G) – PHO, ATL, @DAL, @NOP
