Vasco da Gama vs. Santa Fe Foto:AFP

  • 7th annual NBA Jersey Day: Celebrate the start of the 2026-27 season

Some NBA jerseys can symbolize an entire era of basketball.

The Showtime Lakers, the Bad Boy Pistons, the Bulls of the 90s, the 2000s Lakers and Spurs, and of course, the stars of today, like Jalen Brunson, LeBron James, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and many more, have all established their legacies as some of the most iconic uniforms in NBA history.

On Monday, Oct. 19, grab your favorite jerseys from your closet to celebrate the 7th annual NBA Jersey Day, just one day before the 2026-27 NBA regular season tips off.

    The rules

    1. Post a picture of you and your favorite jersey on social media during the 24-hour window on Oct. 19.
    2. Tag @NBA and your favorite team account for a chance to be featured on league and team social media channels and connect with basketball fans worldwide.

All fans, celebrities, and basketball lovers around the globe are encouraged to wear their favorite NBA jersey and share a photo on social media before the American Express NBA Tip-Off 2026.

It can be a jersey of any kind.

Maybe you want to go throwback with classic looks, a current superstar like Anthony Edwards, one of the game’s top international players like Victor Wembanyama, a must-watch sophomore like Cooper Flagg, a new young and highly anticipated rookie such as No. 1 pick AJ Dybantsa, or a legendary player from the past, like a classic No. 8 Kobe Bryant jersey.

New threads for your favorite players

New looks are also arriving for the 2026-27 season.

Nike and the NBA recently introduced the NBA Standard Issue Collection, a new league-wide look inspired by the next generation of hoopers that is available across all 30 teams. The collection includes the new Specter Edition uniforms for eight of the NBA’s oldest franchises.

While Jersey Day is a chance to look back, it’s also a chance to be a part of something special, and as always, the timing could not be better.

    Opening Week Tripleheader

The 2026-27 NBA season tips off Tuesday, Oct. 20, with a three-game NBC/Peacock slate featuring Boston at Detroit (3 ET), Philadelphia at the defending champion New York Knicks (7 ET) and Oklahoma City at San Antonio (9:30 ET). The Knicks will raise their championship banner before hosting the 76ers, while the Spurs and Thunder meet in a rematch of the 2026 Western Conference Finals.

A new NBA season means new players, new-look teams, new uniforms and, eventually, new memories.

So, ask yourself, which one tells your NBA story or brings back your favorite memory of the game?

Wear it on Oct. 19 and join fans worldwide for the 7th annual NBA Jersey Day.

If you’re looking to add another jersey to your collection before the season begins, be sure to visit the NBA Store online or one of the onsite locations in New York City, Los Angeles, or Houston and shop for your favorite NBA teams and players.

  • The Athletic: Pistons’ Michael Blackstone details cancer fight, his ‘drive’ to help others

Detroit Pistons executive vice president of basketball operations Michael Blackstone opened up about his cancer diagnosis. Photo courtesy of Michael Blackstone

Editor’s Note: Read more NBA coverage from The Athletic here. The views on this page do not necessarily reflect the views of the NBA or its teams.

    ***

Michael Blackstone sat alone. He was crying on the porch of his Florida home.

As he explained it, the emotion of his diagnosis had been building. Some 36 hours earlier, doctors told Blackstone they had found cancer, Stage 4, in his lung. Not only is lung cancer the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, but also the five-year survival rate for someone with late-stage or metastatic, or late-stage non-small cell lung cancer — which Blackstone has — is 12 percent.

That was 2023, when Blackstone was still with New Orleans as the Pelicans’ vice president of basketball administration. His family was in New Orleans, and he traveled to his home in Florida, where his primary care was. So, he confided in a friend who was all too familiar with cancer’s cruelty.

Now, the Detroit Pistons’ executive vice president of basketball operations, Blackstone is speaking publicly because he wants to encourage people to take aches and pains seriously, instead of pushing them aside, and to advocate for their care. In his case, what started as a pain in his right shoulder turned out to be cancer that had metastasized from his lung to his shoulder and spine.

“The reason I’m talking about it now versus the past three years is because time is basically all I have now, right?” the 54-year-old told The Athletic. “Time is what matters. … If I didn’t pay attention to the discomfort I was having and ask a very innocent question, I wouldn’t be here right now. It was already Stage 4 when we found it; it had already gone too far.”

The innocent question: What’s wrong with me?

He had to push for a PET scan — a powerful imaging tool used to detect cancer — that finally led to his diagnosis.

“If I actually went with what I was told initially and didn’t actually demand the scan in combination with my doctor, I wouldn’t be talking to you right now,” Blackstone said.

He is currently under the care of doctors at the Mayo Clinic.

He accepted his role with the Pistons without knowing how long he’d have to assemble a competent roster alongside general manager Trajan Langdon, who brought him along to Detroit from New Orleans in 2024.

Blackstone, who has never smoked, said his love of basketball and Detroit has helped carry him through his radiation treatments. He plans to continue working. He sees it as choosing to fight his diagnosis while simultaneously fighting to reshape the Pistons into a title contender.

Blackstone said he sees beauty in facing his cancer in a city like Detroit — one known for the grit and resilience of its people.

“That should tell you how special I think this (team) is,” Blackstone said. “It’s kind of apropos, in this very morbid way, that I would be here (in Detroit) fighting through what I’m fighting through in a place like this, which is all about the fight.”

Things have changed since Blackstone’s diagnosis. His time is now more precious. He tries to maintain a positive mindset and is more mindful of his well-being. But naturally, some fear still exists.

“This logic side of my brain sort of dominates; it helps me get through what this whole thing is,” Blackstone said. “It is what it is, I have what I have. I don’t control any of it; there’s nothing I can do. I do what the doctors tell me to do. I ask a ton of questions. … The truth is, if it all ended tomorrow, I’ve lived a great life.

“I am so lucky with the types of things I’ve been able to do. … The people I’ve met, the places we’ve gone, the friends I have, the support system, this job, the people (in Detroit) — all the way down the line. Of course, I don’t want it to end tomorrow, and nobody is telling me it’s going to.”

Blackstone can still be found patrolling the halls of the Pistons Performance Center, usually on a call or en route to a boardroom to discuss the evolution of Detroit’s roster. He has routinely been at home and road shootarounds, practices and games to evaluate what this roster needs to contend. He even kept his diagnosis from Pistons staffers, choosing only to share the news in recent weeks.

“I love life,” he said. “On my saddest day, I’ve never, ever thought, ‘I want out.’ I just want to be here as long as I can. … How are we going to attack this, and how do I just keep living my life?

“I don’t want to sit in my house and just wait and wallow away. So, I’m trying to live as normal a life as I possibly can, knowing I’ve got to make some changes.”

Though he understands the severity of his diagnosis, he wants to make clear that although he has cancer, cancer doesn’t have him. Blackstone said he’s vowed to fight with everything he has.

“There’s hope,” he said. “There’s hope because of different advancements made, especially in lung cancer, that we could ultimately get to the place where this becomes a chronic disease versus a death sentence. … Pay attention to the signs, don’t ignore them.”

“My drive is to do everything I can for this team, keep doing my job as long as I possibly can at a high level, but also try to help as many people as I possibly can. There’s only one way to do that, and that’s with awareness. If I can get one person to do a double take, to have a conversation, to go to their doctor, to make different choices, it will all be worth it — even if I don’t know about it.”

  • Why all 30 teams should be optimistic

The Miami Heat add another perennial All-Star in Giannis Antetokounmpo.

For every team in the league, there are reasons to be optimistic and reasons to be pessimistic about the future.

Thinking positively, the young guys are going to get better, the new coach will fix the structural issues, and the offseason acquisition will address the team’s biggest weakness.

On the other hand, maybe the vets are slowing down, the clutch shots won’t bounce the right way, or the team won’t be as healthy as it was last season.

Starting on Oct. 20, we’ll find out which of those viewpoints was the right one. But for this exercise, the glass is half full.

Here’s one reason for every team to be optimistic, whether it’s about the 2026-27 season or further down the line…

    Eastern Conference

Atlanta Hawks – They were 27-14 with CJ McCollum in the lineup last season, then won more playoff games vs. the Knicks (2) than the Sixers, Cavs and Spurs combined.

Boston Celtics – Over the last four years, they were 35-7 (.833) when Jayson Tatum played without Jaylen Brown.

Brooklyn Nets – Julius Randle raises the floor and puts the younger guys in more appropriate roles.

Charlotte Hornets – They scored an efficient 120.3 points per 100 possessions in 332 total minutes (regular season + Play-In) with Coby White on the floor without LaMelo Ball.

Chicago Bulls – Matas Buzelis and Caleb Wilson are a pair of young, long and athletic forwards that could be the envy of the league in a couple of years.

Cleveland Cavaliers – Peyton Watson might be the missing ingredient for a talented team that reached the conference finals in May.

Detroit Pistons – They had the best record in games between eventual playoff teams last season, and the core is still very young.

Indiana Pacers – The last time Tyrese Haliburton was in uniform, the Pacers were playing Game 7 of the Finals.

Miami Heat – Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo are the best defensive frontcourt in the league.

Milwaukee Bucks – The seeds of future success have been planted, with the Bucks having six guys who were selected in the top 20 in the last five drafts.

New York Knicks – They’re the champs and their starters are all in their prime.

Orlando Magic – New head coach Sean Sweeney will likely get them defending at a top-five level again.

Philadelphia 76ers – There’s not a more talented starting lineup in the league.

Toronto Raptors – Kawhi Leonard is back and he addresses the Raptors’ biggest weakness (half-court offense).

Washington Wizards – AJ Dybantsa is a future star, and the combination of Trae Young and Anthony Davis could make this the best Wizards season in several years.

    Western Conference

Dallas Mavericks – Cooper Flagg is the real deal and the return of Kyrie Irving makes the Mavs much more competitive.

Denver Nuggets – Aaron Gordon should be healthier after missing 49 (56%) of a possible 88 games last season (including playoffs).

Golden State Warriors – Kristaps Porziņģis finished the season in uniform, but he played just three games with Stephen Curry. So we’ve yet to really see what they can do together.

Houston Rockets – They had the West’s third-best point differential last season, and Fred VanVleet provides the two things (ball-handling and shooting) they needed most.

LA Clippers – Keaton Wagler is a big guard with a variety of skills, and the Clippers have some vets who could keep them competitive (or get them more picks).

Los Angeles Lakers – They have a keystone on both ends of the floor, with Luka Dončić carrying the offense and Walker Kessler anchoring the defense.

Memphis Grizzlies – Cedric Coward, Cam Boozer and Zach Edey is an intriguing and complementary young core.

Minnesota Timberwolves – LaMelo Ball will make Anthony Edwards (49.6% on catch-and-shoot 3-pointers last season) a more efficient scorer.

New Orleans Pelicans – They outscored their opponents by 6.6 points per 100 possessions in 303 total minutes with Dejounte Murray on the floor with at least two of Herb Jones, Trey Murphy III or Zion Williamson last season.

Oklahoma City Thunder – A healthy Jalen Williams is a game-changer.

Phoenix Suns – The offense was remarkably efficient (122.6 points scored per 100 possessions) in a small sample size (291 total minutes including the Play-In and playoffs) with Jalen Green (who played in only 38 games) on the floor with both Devin Booker and Dillon Brooks.

Portland Trail Blazers – The return of Damian Lillard and the addition of Ja Morant is a huge infusion of backcourt talent.

Sacramento Kings – The duo of Darius Acuff Jr. and Nique Clifford should be fun to watch … and potentially very potent in two or three years.

San Antonio Spurs – Dylan Harper, Stephon Castle and Victor Wembanyama are just 20, 21 and 22 years old, respectively.

Utah Jazz – The flip is about to be switched, and this team has the talent to compete for a playoff spot while also developing two top-five picks from the last two drafts.
